2023 Bugatti Chiron
2022 McLaren 720S

Safety

The Chiron has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The 720S doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Chiron’s blind spot camera is used to display a wide-angle view of the passenger side of the road. The 720S doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

Both the Chiron and the 720S have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The Bugatti Chiron weighs 951 to 1259 pounds more than the McLaren 720S. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Engine

The Chiron’s standard 8.0 turbo 16-cylinder produces 769 more horsepower (1479 vs. 710) and 612 lbs.-ft. more torque (1180 vs. 568) than the 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8. The Chiron Super Sport’s standard 8.0 turbo 16-cylinder produces 868 more horsepower (1578 vs. 710) and 612 lbs.-ft. more torque (1180 vs. 568) than the 720S’ 4.0 turbo V8.

As tested in Car and Driver the Bugatti Chiron 8.0 is faster than the McLaren 720S:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Chiron has 7.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the 720S (26.4 vs. 19 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Drivetrain

All wheel drive, available in the Chiron, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The McLaren 720S is not available with all wheel drive.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Chiron’s brake rotors are larger than those on the 720S:

Front Rotors

16.5 inches

Rear Rotors

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Chiron has larger tires than the 720S (F:285/30R20 & R:355/25R21 vs. F:245/35R19 & R:305/30R20).

The Chiron’s 285/30R20 front and 355/25R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series front and 25 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 720S’ standard 35 series front and 30 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Chiron has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Only 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are available on the 720S.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Chiron’s wheelbase is 1.6 inches longer than on the 720S (106.7 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Chiron is 3 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than on the 720S.

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Chiron Sport is quieter than the 720S Coupe:

Passenger Space

The Chiron has 6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 720S (54 vs. 48).

Ergonomics

The Chiron’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The 720S does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Chiron’s power mirror controls are mounted on the door for easy access. The 720S’ power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

To help keep the driver’s hands on the wheel, the Chiron has standard steering wheel controls for the radio. The 720S doesn’t offer steering wheel audio controls.
