Compare the2027 BMW X5 VS 2027 Genesis GV70

The BMW X5 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GV70 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

The X5 has standard Active Head Restraints, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Head Restraints system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The X5 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GV70 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Compared to metal, the X5’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV70 has a metal gas tank.

Both the X5 and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The BMW X5 weighs 564 to 891 pounds more than the Genesis GV70. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The X5’s corrosion warranty is 5 years longer than the GV70’s (12 vs. 7 years).

There are over 72 percent more BMW dealers than there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the X5’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks BMW above average in long-term dependability. With 24 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Genesis is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 16 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

The X5’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 94 more horsepower (394 vs. 300) and 117 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 311) than the GV70’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The X5’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 19 more horsepower (394 vs. 375) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 391) than the GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6.

On the EPA test cycle the X5 gets better mileage than the GV70:

Regenerative brakes improve the X5’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The GV70 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The X5 has 4.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the GV70 (21.9 vs. 17.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW X5 higher (6 out of 10) than the Genesis GV70 (5 to 6). This means the X5 produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the GV70 every 15,000 miles.

For better traction, the X5 has larger tires than the GV70 (F:255/50R21 & R:284/45R21 vs. 235/55R19).

The X5’s 255/50R21 front and 284/45R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series front and 45 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GV70’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the X5 has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the GV70. The X5’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels on the GV70 Sport Prestige/Prestige Graphite.

The X5 has a standard automatic load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GV70 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The X5 has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The GV70 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the X5’s wheelbase is 6.3 inches longer than on the GV70 (119.5 inches vs. 113.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the X5 is 2.7 inches wider in the front and 2.1 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the GV70.

The design of the BMW X5 amounts to more than styling. The X5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the GV70 (.32) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the X5 get better fuel mileage.

The X5 has 1.1 inches more front headroom, .9 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, .2 inches more rear legroom and 1.2 inches more rear shoulder room than the GV70.

The X5 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GV70 with its rear seat folded (67.7 vs. 56.9 cubic feet).

The X5’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The GV70’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

The X5’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the GV70’s (7710 vs. 3500 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stabilization Control on the X5 uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV70 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The X5 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the X5 the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the GV70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The X5’s optional power side swing out doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the sport utility. The GV70 doesn’t offer a power rear door.

The BMW X5 has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the GV70 Select/Advanced/Prestige.

The X5 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel is only available on the GV70 Select/Advanced/Prestige.

Both the BMW X5 and the Genesis GV70 have a standard Qi wireless phone charging system in the front seat. To easily keep personal devices charged in the rear seat, without cables tangling and wearing out, the X5 also has a standard wireless charging system in the rear seat. The GV70 does not.

The BMW X5 outsold the Genesis GV70 by over two to one during 2025.
