The X5’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 59 more horsepower (394 vs. 335) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (428 vs. 369) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the X5 40 40i xDrive gets better fuel mileage than the Q8 (24 city/28 hwy vs. 17 city/23 hwy).

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW X5 higher (6 out of 10) than the Audi Q8 (4). This means the X5 produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Q8 every 15,000 miles.

The design of the BMW X5 amounts to more than styling. The X5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the Q8 (.39) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the X5 get better fuel mileage.

The X5 has 3.6 inches more front headroom, .5 inches more front shoulder room and 1.3 inches more rear headroom than the Q8.

The X5 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Q8 with its rear seat folded (67.7 vs. 60.7 cubic feet).

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the X5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Q8 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The X5’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Q8’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Standard Trailer Stabilization Control on the X5 uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Q8 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The X5’s optional power side swing out doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the sport utility. The Q8 doesn’t offer a power rear door.

The Q8’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The X5’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

The X5 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Q8.

Both the BMW X5 and the Audi Q8 have a standard Qi wireless phone charging system in the front seat. To easily keep personal devices charged in the rear seat, without cables tangling and wearing out, the X5 also has a standard wireless charging system in the rear seat. The Q8 does not.
