Compare the2027 GMC Terrain VS 2026 Jeep Compass

With its standard Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, the GMC Terrain is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Jeep Compass, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the GMC Terrain achieved an “Acceptable” rating for its forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, outperforming the Jeep Compass, which scored only a “Marginal” in these critical safety features.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Terrain has standard Reverse Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Compass doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The GMC Terrain offers an optional HD Surround Vision and it also offers an optional rear camera washer to make backing always safe, regardless of road dirt or grime, while the Jeep Compass doesn’t offer a camera washer, requiring manual cleaning.

Both the Terrain and Compass have rear cross-traffic warning, but the Terrain has Rear Cross Traffic Braking (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Compass’ Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the Terrain and the Compass have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all-wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Terrain’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Compass’ (6 vs. 5 years).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks GMC above average in long-term dependability. With 94 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Jeep is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 1 place higher in reliability than Jeep.

The Terrain FWD’s standard fuel tank has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Compass (14.8 vs. 13.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Terrain AWD’s standard fuel tank has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Compass (15.6 vs. 13.5 gallons).

For better traction, the Terrain has larger tires than the Compass (235/65R17 vs. 215/65R17).

The Terrain has 1.4 inches more front headroom, 2.8 inches more front legroom, 1.2 inches more front hip room, 1 inch more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, 1.4 inches more rear legroom, 1.8 inches more rear hip room and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Compass.

The front step up height for the Terrain is 1 inches lower than the Compass (18.4” vs. 19.4”). The Terrain’s rear step up height is 2.7 inches lower than the Compass’ (18” vs. 20.7”).

The Terrain has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Compass with its rear seat up (29.8 vs. 27.2 cubic feet). The Terrain has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Compass with its rear seat folded (63.5 vs. 59.8 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Terrain easier. The Terrain’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.9 inches, while the Compass’ liftover is 31.1 inches.

The Terrain’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Compass’ (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

When two different drivers share the Terrain, the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Compass doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Terrain’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Compass doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Terrain’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Compass’ rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully.

On a hot day the Terrain’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Compass can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

When the Terrain with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Compass’ mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Terrain keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Compass doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

Both the Terrain and the Compass offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Terrain has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Compass doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Terrain is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Compass doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
