In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Ferrari 296 higher (5 out of 10) than the Porsche 911 (4 to 5). This means the 296 produces up to 5.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 911 every 15,000 miles.

The 296’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 911’s standard 40 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 296 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch front wheels are standard on the 911.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires optional on the 296 can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The 911 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The 296 Assetto Fiorano GTB handles at 1.15 G’s, while the 911 Carrera T Coupe pulls only 1.05 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The 296 Assetto Fiorano GTB executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.7 seconds quicker than the 911 Carrera T Coupe (21.7 seconds @ 1.04 average G’s vs. 23.4 seconds @ .87 average G’s).

The 296’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The 911 doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

The 296 GTB has a much larger trunk than the 911 Coupe with its rear seat up (6 vs. 4.8 cubic feet).

The 296 has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and tachometer readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The 911 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The 296 has standard Keyless Entry and Ignition that allows you to unlock the doors from either outside door handle and start the car, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. The 911 GT3 doesn’t offer Comfort Access.

The 296’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The 911’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.
