Safety

The Outlander Sport has standard Active Front Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Front Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Rav4 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the Outlander Sport and the Rav4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Outlander Sport comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Rav4’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander Sport 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Rav4. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Rav4 ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Outlander Sport’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Rav4’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Engine

The Outlander Sport has more powerful engines than the Rav4:

Torque

Outlander Sport 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder

145 lbs.-ft.

Outlander Sport SEL 2.4 DOHC 4-cylinder

167 lbs.-ft.

Rav4 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid

Rav4 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid

Rav4 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid

Fuel Economy and Range

The Outlander Sport has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Rav4 (15.8 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Suspension and Handling

The Outlander Sport has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Rav4 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better maneuverability, the Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Rav4’s (34.8 feet vs. 36.9 feet). The Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 2.5 feet tighter than the Rav4 GR Sport’s (34.8 feet vs. 37.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander Sport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Rav4 GR Sport (8.5 vs. 7.5 inches), allowing the Outlander Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 600 pounds less than the Toyota Rav4.

The Outlander Sport is 9.1 inches shorter than the Rav4, making the Outlander Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Outlander Sport has 1.5 inches more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom and 2 inches more rear hip room than the Rav4.

Ergonomics

The Outlander Sport’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Rav4 LE’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

The Outlander Sport’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Toyota only offers heated mirrors on the Rav4 SE/Woodland/XLE/XSE/Limited/GR Sport.

Both the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Toyota Rav4 offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Outlander Sport offers available power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Rav4’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.
