The Outlander has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The CR-V doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

With its standard Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection, the Mitsubishi Outlander is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Honda CR-V, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

The Outlander SE/SEL/Trail has a standard Multi View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The CR-V only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Outlander has standard Rear Cross Traffic Alert, helping the driver avoid collisions. Only the CR-V EX/Hybrid offers Cross Traffic Monitor.

Both the Outlander and the CR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and lane departure warning systems.

The Outlander comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The CR-V’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Honda covers the CR-V. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the CR-V ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Outlander’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the CR-V’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Mitsubishi pays for scheduled maintenance (up to 3 visits) on the Outlander for 1 year and 18000 miles longer than Honda pays for maintenance for the CR-V (2/30,000 vs. 1/12000).

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Outlander has a standard 720-amp battery. The CR-V’s 410-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The Outlander’s 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 27 lbs.-ft. more torque (206 vs. 179) than the CR-V’s standard 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mitsubishi Outlander uses regular unleaded gasoline. The CR-V with the 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

For better stopping power the Outlander’s brake rotors are larger than those on the CR-V:

The Outlander’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the CR-V are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Outlander SE/SEL’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CR-V (255/45R20 vs. 235/60R18).

The Outlander ES/Trail’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CR-V LX’s standard 65 series tires. The Outlander SE/SEL’s tires have a lower 45 series profile than the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Outlander ES/Trail has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the CR-V LX. The Outlander SE/SEL’s 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels on the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid.

The Outlander has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The CR-V doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Outlander has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The CR-V’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For better maneuverability, the Outlander’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the CR-V Hybrid’s (36.7 feet vs. 37 feet). The Outlander’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the CR-V 1.5T’s (36.7 feet vs. 37.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander ES/Trail has a greater minimum ground clearance than the CR-V (8.3 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Outlander to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Outlander SE/SEL’s minimum ground clearance is .2 inch higher than on the CR-V (8.4 vs. 8.2 inches).

The Outlander has standard seating for 7 passengers; the CR-V can only carry 5.

The Outlander has 19.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the CR-V (125.5 vs. 106).

The Outlander has .6 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, .9 inches more rear headroom and .7 inches more rear hip room than the CR-V.

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Outlander’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The CR-V doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The Outlander’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the CR-V’s (2000 vs. 1000 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Outlander uses the Active Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The CR-V doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Outlander SEL offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction, infotainment and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Outlander S-AWC has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The CR-V doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Outlander to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The CR-V doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Outlander SEL is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The CR-V’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Mitsubishi Outlander and Honda CR-V offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Outlander offers available power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the CR-V’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

Both the Outlander and the CR-V offer available heated front seats. The Outlander SEL also has standard heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CR-V.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the Outlander SEL keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The CR-V doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Outlander has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the CR-V EX/EX-L/Sport/TrailSport/Sport-L/Sport Touring.

Compared to the Honda CR-V, the Mitsubishi Outlander SE/SEL eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its standard integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the rear view mirror.

Compared to traditional radio, the Mitsubishi Outlander’s standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks. Satellite radio is only offered on the CR-V EX-L/Sport-L/Sport Touring.

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Mitsubishi Outlander and the Honda CR-V, based on reliability, safety and performance.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Outlander third among compact suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The CR-V isn’t in the top three.
