The Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s rear backup camera has a standard washer for maintaining a clear view under various conditions. In contrast, the Volvo XC60 does not offer a rear camera washer, meaning its effectiveness relies on manual cleaning by the user when necessary.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the XC60 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Land Rover vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 50 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Land Rover higher than Volvo.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Range Rover Sport can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 53 miles. The XC60 T8 Extended Range has to start its internal combustion engine after only 35 miles.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the XC60 have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Range Rover Sports have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The XC60 T8 doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard fuel tank has 5 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC60 (23.8 vs. 18.8 gallons).

Transmission

The Range Rover Sport’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XC60 doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport’s brake rotors are larger than those on the XC60:

The Range Rover Sport SV offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The XC60 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Range Rover Sport has larger standard tires than the XC60 (275/50R21 vs. 235/60R18). The Range Rover Sport SV’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the XC60 (F:285/40R23 & R:305/35R23 vs. 265/35R22).

The Range Rover Sport’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XC60’s standard 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport has standard 21-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the XC60. The Range Rover Sport’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels optional on the XC60.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the XC60; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The XC60 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XC60, which uses coil springs in front and transverse leafs springs in the rear. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Volvo doesn’t offer an active suspension on the XC60.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The XC60’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Sport’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XC60 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Sport’s wheelbase is 5.2 inches longer than on the XC60 (118 inches vs. 112.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Sport is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 1.9 inches wider in the rear than on the XC60.

The Range Rover Sport SV handles at .90 G’s, while the XC60 T8 Core pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Range Rover Sport SV executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.4 seconds quicker than the XC60 B5 Core (24.9 seconds @ .79 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the XC60’s (35.9 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport has a 2.5 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the XC60 (11 vs. 8.5 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the XC60 (.32) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Sport get better fuel mileage.

The Range Rover Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC60 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Range Rover Sport SE is quieter than the XC60 T8 Ultra (66 vs. 67 dB).

Passenger Space

The Range Rover Sport has 1.3 inches more front headroom and .7 inches more rear headroom than the XC60.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats recline. The XC60’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume than the XC60 with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 22.4 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The XC60 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Towing

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the XC60’s (7716 vs. 3500 pounds).

Servicing Ease

The engine in the Range Rover Sport is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC60. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Sport’s standard Entry and Exit Mode raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC60 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The XC60 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Range Rover Sport to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XC60 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Range Rover Sport has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The XC60 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Range Rover Sport has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XC60.

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Volvo charges extra for Homelink® on the XC60.

The Range Rover Sport is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the XC60, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the Range Rover Sport offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the XC60.

HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the Range Rover Sport equipped with HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The XC60, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. Selecting the Land Rover Range Rover Sport empowers drivers to enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable listening experience while on the go.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the XC60.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XC60 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Range Rover Sport’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The XC60 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover Sport third among large premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XC60 isn’t in the top three in its category.
