Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Maserati Grecale are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW XM doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Grecale and XM have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Grecale has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The XM’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Grecale and the XM have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Grecale running on electricity gets better mileage than the XM running on electricity:

On the EPA test cycle the Grecale running its gasoline engine gets better mileage than the XM running its gasoline engine:

Modena V6 3.0 turbo V6

The Grecale can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 206 to 245 miles. The XM Label has to start its internal combustion engine after only 30 miles.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Grecale Trofeo’s fuel efficiency. The XM doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Grecale uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XM, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Grecale has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grecale’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XM doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

Chassis

The Maserati Grecale may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 1950 pounds less than the BMW XM.

The Grecale Modena V6 is 10.4 inches shorter than the XM, making the Grecale easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Grecale has .9 inches more front legroom and .1 inches more rear headroom than the XM.

Cargo Capacity

The Grecale has a much larger cargo volume than the XM with its rear seat up (20.1 vs. 18.6 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Grecale easier. The Grecale’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28.8 inches, while the XM’s liftover is 32.8 inches.

The Grecale’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The XM’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Grecale’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The XM doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

The Grecale’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The XM does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Grecale offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XM doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Economic Advantages

According to iSeeCars.com the 2025 Maserati Grecale retains 41.88% of its original value after 5 years, more than the 38.89% resale value of the 2025 BMW XM after five years, which can save the Maserati’s owner up to $48959.31073 in depreciation.

Recommendations

The Maserati Grecale outsold the BMW XM by 42% during 2024.
