Compare the2026 Volvo EX40VS 2025 Porsche Taycan

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the EX40 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Taycan doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The EX40 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Taycan doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EX40’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The Taycan doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the EX40 and the Taycan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

There are over 39 percent more Volvo dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the EX40’s warranty.

On the EPA test cycle the EX40 gets better mileage than the Taycan Cross Turismo:

The EX40 Single Motor FWD can travel longer on a full charge than the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo (296 miles vs. 265 miles).

For better traction, the EX40 has larger front tires than the Taycan (235/50R19 vs. 225/55R19).

The EX40’s standard 235/50R19 front tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Taycan’s standard 55 series front tires.

The Volvo EX40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 550 pounds less than the Porsche Taycan.

The EX40 is 1 foot, 9 inches shorter than the Taycan Cross Turismo, making the EX40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the EX40 has standard flush composite headlights. The Taycan has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The EX40 has 6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Taycan Cross Turismo (98 vs. 92).

The EX40 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Taycan Cross Turismo with its rear seat folded (57.5 vs. 45.8 cubic feet).

A control in the cargo area automatically lowers the EX40’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Taycan doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Optional Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the EX40 uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Taycan doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

If the windows are left open on the EX40 the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Taycan can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The EX40’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Taycan’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the EX40 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Taycan doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Taycan doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Volvo EX40/XC40 outsold the Porsche Taycan by almost six to one during 2024.
