Safety

The EX40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Optiq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the EX40 and Optiq have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The EX40 Ultra has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Optiq’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The EX40 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Optiq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the EX40 and the Optiq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The EX40’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Optiq’s (12 vs. 6 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX40 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volvo will pay for cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Optiq.

Reliability

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 6 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the EX40 has larger rear tires than the Optiq (255/45R19 vs. 245/50R20).

The EX40’s standard 255/45R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Optiq’s standard 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The EX40 Ultra handles at .87 G’s, while the Optiq Sport AWD pulls only .78 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The EX40 AWD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.1 seconds quicker than the Optiq Sport AWD (26.3 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27.4 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the EX40’s turning circle is 2.4 feet tighter than the Optiq’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the EX40 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Optiq (6.9 vs. 6 inches), allowing the EX40 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Volvo EX40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 800 pounds less than the Cadillac Optiq.

The EX40 is 1 foot, 3 inches shorter than the Optiq, making the EX40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The EX40 has 3.6 inches more rear hip room and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Optiq.

Cargo Capacity

The EX40 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Optiq with its rear seat folded (57.5 vs. 57 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the EX40. The Optiq doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The EX40’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Optiq’s (2000 vs. 1500 pounds).

While the Optiq V-Series is not recommended to tow, any EX40 can tow a minimum of 2000 pounds.

Ergonomics

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the EX40 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Optiq doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX40 has a standard rear wiper. The Optiq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Optiq doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Optiq Premium/V-Series’ cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The EX40’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Recommendations

The Volvo EX40/XC40 outsold the Cadillac Optiq by almost 50 to one during 2024.
