2026 Volvo EX40
2026 Cadillac Lyriq

Safety

The EX40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The EX40 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the EX40 and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The EX40’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the Lyriq’s (12 vs. 6 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX40 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volvo will pay for cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Lyriq.

Reliability

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 6 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

Tires and Wheels

The EX40’s standard 255/45R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Lyriq’s standard 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The EX40 AWD handles at .84 G’s, while the Lyriq pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the EX40’s turning circle is 2.2 feet tighter than the Lyriq’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.6 feet).

For greater off-road capability the EX40 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Lyriq-V (6.9 vs. 6.2 inches), allowing the EX40 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Volvo EX40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1200 to 1350 pounds less than the Cadillac Lyriq.

The EX40 is 1 foot, 9.9 inches shorter than the Lyriq, making the EX40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The EX40 has .6 inches more rear headroom and .6 inches more rear hip room than the Lyriq.

The front step up height for the EX40 is 1.5 inches lower than the Lyriq (17.7” vs. 19.2”). The EX40’s rear step up height is 1 inches lower than the Lyriq’s (18.2” vs. 19.2”).

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the EX40. The Lyriq doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

The EX40’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Lyriq’s (2000 vs. 0 pounds).

Servicing Ease

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the EX40 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

Ergonomics

If the windows are left open on the EX40 the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the EX40 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Lyriq doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX40 has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Lyriq doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Lyriq’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The EX40’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
