Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EX30 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The MINI Countryman SE doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EX30 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The MINI Countryman SE doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The EX30 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The EX30 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the EX30 and the Countryman SE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

For greater off-road capability the EX30 Cross Country has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Countryman SE (7.5 vs. 7.4 inches), allowing the EX30 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Volvo EX30 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 700 pounds less than the MINI Countryman SE.

The EX30 is 8.3 inches shorter than the Countryman SE, making the EX30 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The EX30 has 1 inch more front headroom, 1.5 inches more front legroom and .9 inches more rear headroom than the Countryman SE.

Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the MINI Countryman SE is limited to 2646 pounds. The EX30 offers up to a 3527 lbs. towing capacity.

A Trailer Stability Assist is standard on the EX30, using the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the Countryman SE.

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX30 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Countryman SE only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Model Availability

The EX30 is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Countryman SE doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
