Compare the2026 Genesis G70VS 2024 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Genesis G70 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The G70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G70 has standard whiplash protection, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the whiplash protection system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The G70 Prestige has a standard Surround View Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The 2 Series Gran Coupe only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the G70 and 2 Series Gran Coupe have rear cross-traffic warning, but the G70 has Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s Cross Traffic Warning doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the G70 and the 2 Series Gran Coupe have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available all-wheel drive.

The G70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The 2 Series Gran Coupe’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than BMW covers the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the 2 Series Gran Coupe ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the G70 second among compact premium cars in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The 2 Series Gran Coupe isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 13 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated below average.

The G70 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 72 more horsepower (300 vs. 228) and 53 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 258) than the 228i Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The G70 3.3T’s standard 3.3 turbo V6 produces 63 more horsepower (365 vs. 302) and 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (376 vs. 332) than the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the G70 3.3T is faster than the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe:

The G70 has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (15.8 vs. 13.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

For better stopping power the G70’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the 2 Series Gran Coupe:

For better traction and acceleration, the G70 has larger rear tires than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (255/35R19 vs. 225/45R17). The G70’s rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (255/35R19 vs. 235/35R19).

The G70’s 225/40R19 front and 255/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G70 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G70’s wheelbase is 6.5 inches longer than on the 2 Series Gran Coupe (111.6 inches vs. 105.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the G70 is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.6 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The G70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s (58.3% to 41.7%). This gives the G70 more stable handling and braking.

The G70 handles at .95 G’s, while the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe pulls only .91 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The G70 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe (24.9 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 25.8 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the G70’s turning circle is 1.1 feet tighter than the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s (36.3 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

The front grille of the G70 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the G70 is quieter than the M235i xDrive Gran Coupe:

The G70 has 4.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 2 Series Gran Coupe (95.9 vs. 91).

The G70 has 1.2 inches more front legroom, .8 inches more front shoulder room, 3 inches more rear headroom, .4 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear shoulder room than the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The engine in the G70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the 2 Series Gran Coupe. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G70 Prestige’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The G70’s standard Proximity Key allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the trunk, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Comfort Go standard on the 2 Series Gran Coupe only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the car.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The G70’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s headlights are rated “Acceptable” to “Marginal.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the G70 has standard extendable sun visors. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The G70 has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the 2 Series Gran Coupe. The G70 Prestige/Sport also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the G70 Prestige keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The 2 Series Gran Coupe doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Genesis G70 has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. BMW charges extra for Homelink® on the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The G70 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2019. The 2 Series Gran Coupe has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
