The Volkswagen ID.BUZZ weighs 935 to 1755 pounds more than the Volvo XC90. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The ID.BUZZ can travel with zero emissions on a full charge for 231 to 234 miles. The XC90 T8 Extended Range has to start its internal combustion engine after only 32 miles.

The ID.BUZZ has a standard locking charge port which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the XC90. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage; a locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Volkswagen ID.BUZZ higher (10 out of 10) than the Volvo XC90 (6). This means the ID.BUZZ produces up to 12.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC90 every 15,000 miles.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the ID.BUZZ’s wheelbase is 10 inches longer than on the XC90 (127.5 inches vs. 117.5 inches).

For better maneuverability, the ID.BUZZ’s turning circle is 2.3 feet tighter than the XC90’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

The design of the Volkswagen ID.BUZZ amounts to more than styling. The ID.BUZZ has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the XC90 (.33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the ID.BUZZ get better fuel mileage.

The ID.BUZZ has 56.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC90 (160.1 vs. 103.8).

The ID.BUZZ’s standard sliding doors can be opened with less than three inches side clearance. The XC90’s standard rear swing-out doors are bulky and make loading in tight spots difficult.

The ID.BUZZ’s power side sliding doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the van. The XC90 doesn’t offer a power rear door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the ID.BUZZ to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the XC90.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the ID.BUZZ has standard extendable sun visors. The XC90 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The ID.BUZZ has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XC90.

The ID.BUZZ’s Park Assist Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The XC90 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The ID.BUZZ is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The XC90 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

The ID.BUZZ was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025. The XC90 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
