Both the GV70 and Land Cruiser have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The GV70 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Land Cruiser’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The GV70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the GV70 uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The Land Cruiser uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the GV70 and the Land Cruiser have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Genesis GV70 is safer than the Toyota Land Cruiser:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Genesis GV70 is safer than the Toyota Land Cruiser:

The Genesis GV70 (built after April 2024) has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Land Cruiser has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

Warranty

The GV70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Land Cruiser’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the GV70 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Land Cruiser. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Land Cruiser ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The GV70’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Land Cruiser’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the GV70 for 1 year and 11000 miles longer than Toyota pays for maintenance for the Land Cruiser (3/36,000 vs. 2/25000).

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis above average in initial quality. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated lower.

Engine

The GV70’s optional 3.5 turbo V6 produces 49 more horsepower (375 vs. 326) than the Land Cruiser’s 2.4 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Car and Driver the Genesis GV70 is faster than the Toyota Land Cruiser:

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the GV70 with its standard engine gets better fuel mileage than the Land Cruiser (20 city/28 hwy vs. 22 city/25 hwy).

Both the GV70 and Land Cruiser have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. The GV70 has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

Transmission

The GV70’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the GV70’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the Land Cruiser:

Tires and Wheels

The GV70’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Land Cruiser 1958’s standard 70 series tires. The GV70 Sport Prestige’s tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Land Cruiser’s optional 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GV70 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Land Cruiser 1958. The GV70 Sport Prestige’s 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the Land Cruiser.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Genesis GV70 has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Toyota Land Cruiser has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The GV70 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Land Cruiser’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The GV70 Sport Prestige handles at .86 G’s, while the Land Cruiser pulls only .69 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The GV70 Sport Prestige executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 3.3 seconds quicker than the Land Cruiser (26.4 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 29.7 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GV70’s turning circle is 1.7 feet tighter than the Land Cruiser’s (37.7 feet vs. 39.4 feet).

Chassis

The Genesis GV70 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 1100 pounds less than the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The GV70 is 10.8 inches shorter than the Land Cruiser, making the GV70 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The GV70 is 11.5 inches shorter in height than the Land Cruiser, making the GV70 much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Unibody construction lowers the GV70’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The Land Cruiser doesn’t use unibody construction, but a body-on-frame design.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the GV70 Advanced is quieter than the Land Cruiser (65 vs. 68 dB).

Passenger Space

The GV70 has 8.3 inches more front legroom, .6 inches more front shoulder room and 10.5 inches more rear legroom than the Land Cruiser.

The front step up height for the GV70 is 5.5 inches lower than the Land Cruiser (17.5” vs. 23”). The GV70’s rear step up height is 7.2 inches lower than the Land Cruiser’s (17.3” vs. 24.5”).

Cargo Capacity

The GV70 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Land Cruiser with its rear seat folded (56.9 vs. 55.5 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the GV70 easier. The GV70’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.9 inches, while the Land Cruiser’s liftover is 35.6 inches.

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the GV70’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the GV70’s liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Servicing Ease

The GV70 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Land Cruiser uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GV70 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The GV70’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Land Cruiser has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the GV70 and the Land Cruiser have standard heated front seats. The GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Land Cruiser.

The GV70 Sport Prestige/3.5T has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Land Cruiser.

The GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The GV70 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025 and 2 more times in the last 3 years. The Land Cruiser has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.

Motor Trend selected the GV70 as their 2022 Sport Utility of the Year. The Land Cruiser has never been chosen.

The Genesis GV70 outsold the Toyota Land Cruiser by 9% during 2024.
