The EX90’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The VF 9 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EX90 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The VinFast VF 9 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the EX90 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The VF 9 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Volvo EX90 (except 6-Passenger) offers an optional built in child booster seat. It’s more crash worthy than an added child seat because of its direct attachment to the seat. VinFast doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the VF 9. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; EX90 owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

In a Vehicle-to-Vehicle Frontal Crash Prevention 2.0 test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Volvo EX90 achieved a “Good” rating - the highest possible - for its performance in forward collision warning and automatic braking systems, demonstrating its excellent capabilities in preventing collisions. The VinFast VF 9 has not been tested.

Both the EX90 and VF 9 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the EX90 has Braking Intervention (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The VF 9’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the EX90 and the VF 9 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Volvo EX90 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The VF 9 has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

The EX90’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the VF 9’s (12/unlimited vs. 10/125000).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX90 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volvo will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. VinFast doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the VF 9.

There are over 8 times as many Volvo dealers as there are VinFast dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the EX90’s warranty.

The EX90’s standard electric motors produces 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 457) than the VF 9’s electric motors. The EX90’s optional electric motors produces 108 more horsepower (510 vs. 402) and 214 lbs.-ft. more torque (671 vs. 457) than the VF 9’s electric motors.

For better traction and acceleration, the EX90 has larger standard rear tires than the VF 9 (285/45R20 vs. 275/45R20). The EX90 Ultra’s rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the VF 9 (295/45R21 vs. 285/35R22).

The EX90 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The VF 9’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The EX90 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The EX90’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The VF 9 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For greater off-road capability the EX90 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the VF 9 (8.3 vs. 7.4 inches), allowing the EX90 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The EX90’s minimum ground clearance is 1.1 inches higher than on the VF 9 (8.5 vs. 7.4 inches).

The Volvo EX90 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 350 pounds less than the VinFast VF 9.

The EX90 is 3.2 inches shorter than the VF 9, making the EX90 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the EX90 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The VF 9 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The EX90’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the VF 9’s (4850 vs. 3968 pounds).

The EX90’s standard Keyless Entry & Drive allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Passive Entry standard on the VF 9 doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX90 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the VF 9 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX90 has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The VF 9 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The Volvo EX90 outsold the VinFast VF 9 by over seven to one during 2024.
