Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The GranTurismo has standard Rear Emergency Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The M2 doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The GranTurismo has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The M2 doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The GranTurismo offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The M2 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the GranTurismo and the M2 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The GranTurismo Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 10 more horsepower (483 vs. 473) than the M2’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranTurismo Modena’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 10 more horsepower (483 vs. 473) than the M2’s optional 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder. The GranTurismo Trofeo’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 69 more horsepower (542 vs. 473) and 36 lbs.-ft. more torque (479 vs. 443) than the M2’s optional 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the GranTurismo’s fuel efficiency. The M2 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The GranTurismo has 4.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the M2 (18.5 vs. 13.7 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Maserati GranTurismo comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the M2.

To facilitate fast shifting and allow the driver to focus on the road, the GranTurismo has a standard up-shift light to indicate when the engine is approaching redline. The M2 doesn’t offer an up-shift light.

All wheel drive, available in the GranTurismo, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The BMW M2 is not available with all wheel drive.

For better traction and acceleration, the GranTurismo has larger rear tires than the M2 (295/30R21 vs. 285/30R20).

The GranTurismo’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the M2’s 35 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GranTurismo has standard 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels. Only 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels are available on the M2.

The front and rear suspension of the GranTurismo uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the M2, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The GranTurismo has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GranTurismo’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The M2 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GranTurismo’s wheelbase is 7.2 inches longer than on the M2 (115.3 inches vs. 108.1 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GranTurismo is 1.1 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than on the M2.

The front grille of the GranTurismo uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The M2 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the GranTurismo’s trunk can be opened just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The GranTurismo also offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by kicking your foot under the back bumper. The M2 doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the M2, the GranTurismo has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GranTurismo’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The M2 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the GranTurismo to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The M2 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GranTurismo has standard extendable sun visors. The M2 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the GranTurismo keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The M2 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Maserati GranTurismo has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the M2.
