Warranty

Buick’s powertrain warranty covers the Envista 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 3 times as many Buick dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Envista’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Envista’s reliability 13 points higher than the XC40.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Buick vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Buick above average in initial quality. With 78 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Buick vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Buick third in reliability, above the industry average. With 96 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is ranked 24th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Buick vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Buick 4 places higher in reliability than Volvo.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Envista gets better fuel mileage than the XC40 T5 (28 city/32 hwy vs. 23 city/30 hwy).

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Buick Envista uses regular unleaded gasoline. The XC40 requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Buick Envista higher (6 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (4). This means the Envista produces up to 12.1 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.

Tires and Wheels

The Envista has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The XC40 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The Envista Sport Touring handles at .82 G’s, while the XC40 B5 Plus pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

Chassis

The Buick Envista may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 850 pounds less than the Volvo XC40.

The front grille of the Envista uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Envista uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The XC40 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Envista has .4 inches more front headroom, 1 inch more front legroom and 2.6 inches more rear legroom than the XC40.

Cargo Capacity

The Envista has a larger cargo volume than the XC40 with its rear seat up (20.7 vs. 20.4 cubic feet).

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Buick service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Buick 9th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 18% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 23rd.

Ergonomics

The Envista’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The XC40 has neither an oil pressure gauge nor a temperature gauge.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Envista’s available exterior PIN entry system. The XC40 doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its Volvo On Call can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Buick Envista, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Volvo XC40 isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Envista third among small suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XC40 isn’t in the top three in its category.

The Buick Envista outsold the Volvo EX40/XC40 by almost two to one during 2024.
