Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Porsche Macan Electric have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The BMW XM doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Porsche Macan Electric are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW XM doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Macan Electric and the XM have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche above average in initial quality. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Porsche above average in long-term dependability. With 15 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, BMW is rated lower.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Porsche vehicles are more reliable than BMW vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Porsche 1 place higher in reliability than BMW.

Engine

The Macan Turbo Electric’s electric motors produces 95 lbs.-ft. more torque (833 vs. 738) than the XM Label Red’s optional 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid.

The Macan Electric can travel with zero emissions on a full charge for 288 to 315 miles. The XM has to start its internal combustion engine after only 31 miles.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Macan Electric uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XM, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Macan Electric has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Macan Electric’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The XM doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better maneuverability, the Macan Electric’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the XM’s (39.7 feet vs. 41 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Macan Turbo Electric has a greater minimum ground clearance than the XM (8.8 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Macan Electric to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Macan Electric’s minimum ground clearance is .2 inch higher than on the XM (8.9 vs. 8.7 inches).

Chassis

The Porsche Macan Electric may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 1100 pounds less than the BMW XM.

The Macan Electric is 1 foot shorter than the XM, making the Macan Electric easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The Macan Electric has a much larger cargo volume than the XM with its rear seat up (22.1 vs. 18.6 cubic feet).

The Macan Electric’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The XM’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

Payload

The Macan Electric has a higher standard payload capacity than the XM (1111 vs. 1041 lbs.).

Ergonomics

The Macan Electric’s standard Comfort Access allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Comfort Access standard on the XM doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Macan Electric to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The XM doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Macan Electric offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XM doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Macan Electric is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The XM doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Porsche Macan Electric outsold the BMW XM by almost 11 to one during 2024.
