The Cullinan’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GX doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the Cullinan and GX have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Cullinan has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GX’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Cullinan helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The GX doesn’t offer a night vision system.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the Cullinan uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The GX uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the Cullinan and the GX have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

The Cullinan comes with a full 4-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The GX’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

Rolls-Royce pays for scheduled maintenance on the Cullinan for 3 years and unlimited miles longer than Lexus pays for maintenance for the GX (4/unlimited vs. 1/10,000).

Engine

The Cullinan’s standard 6.8 turbo V12 produces 214 more horsepower (563 vs. 349) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 479) than the GX’s 3.4 turbo V6. The Cullinan Black Badge’s standard 6.8 turbo V12 produces 243 more horsepower (592 vs. 349) and 185 lbs.-ft. more torque (664 vs. 479) than the GX’s 3.4 turbo V6.

As tested in Car and Driver the Rolls-Royce Cullinan (base engine) is faster than the Lexus GX:

Fuel Economy and Range

The Cullinan has 2.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the GX (23.8 vs. 21.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Cullinan’s brake rotors are larger than those on the GX:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction and acceleration, the Cullinan has larger standard rear tires than the GX (285/40R22 vs. 265/55R20). The Cullinan’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the GX (295/35R23 vs. 265/55R20).

The Cullinan’s standard 255/45R22 front and 285/40R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GX Overtrail’s standard 70 series tires. The Cullinan’s optional 255/40R23 front and 295/35R23 rear tires have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile than the GX’s optional 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Cullinan has standard 22-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the GX Overtrail. The Cullinan’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the GX.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Cullinan can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The GX doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The front and rear suspension of the Cullinan uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the GX, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Cullinan offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Lexus doesn’t offer an active suspension on the GX.

The Cullinan has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Cullinan’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The GX doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Cullinan’s wheelbase is 17.5 inches longer than on the GX (129.7 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

The Cullinan’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (49% to 51%) than the GX’s (52.2% to 47.8%). This gives the Cullinan more stable handling and braking.

The Cullinan handles at .83 G’s, while the GX Overtrail+ pulls only .71 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Cullinan Black Badge executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.3 seconds quicker than the GX Luxury+ (26.6 seconds @ .68 average G’s vs. 28.9 seconds @ .59 average G’s).

Chassis

Unibody construction lowers the Cullinan’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The GX doesn’t use unibody construction, but a body-on-frame design.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Cullinan is quieter than the GX Overtrail+:

Passenger Space

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Cullinan when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the tailgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The GX doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Cargo Capacity

The Cullinan has a much larger cargo volume than the GX with its rear seat up (19.8 vs. 10.3 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the GX, the Cullinan has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Cullinan’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the GX.

The Cullinan’s power side reverse swing out doors make it much easier to load and unload kids and cargo. One touch opens the door, before you even get to the sport utility. The GX doesn’t offer a power rear door.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Cullinan to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The GX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The GX’s optional cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Cullinan’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Optional air conditioned front and rear seats keep the Cullinan’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The GX doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Cullinan has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the GX.

The Cullinan has standard massaging front seats. Massaging front seats are only available on the GX Luxury/Overland+. The Cullinan also offers optional massaging rear seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging second row seats aren’t available in the GX.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the GX. The Cullinan also offers Qi charging in the rear seat. The GX doesn’t offer wireless charging in its second row seat.

The Cullinan’s optional Automatic Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The GX doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
