Both the Outlander Sport and the Compass have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is safer than the Jeep Compass:

The Outlander Sport comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Compass’ 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander Sport 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Jeep covers the Compass. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Compass ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Outlander Sport’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Compass’ (7 vs. 5 years).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Jeep vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi above average in initial quality. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jeep is rated below average.

The Outlander Sport has 2.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Compass (15.8 vs. 13.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Outlander Sport has a standard locking fuel door. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Compass. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

The Outlander Sport has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Compass doesn’t offer a CVT.

The Outlander Sport stops much shorter than the Compass:

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Outlander Sport’s wheelbase is 1.3 inches longer than on the Compass (105.1 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

The Outlander Sport SE handles at .77 G’s, while the Compass Trailhawk pulls only .73 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Outlander Sport 4WD executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Compass Trailhawk (28.9 seconds @ .56 average G’s vs. 29.6 seconds @ .53 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Outlander Sport’s turning circle is .5 feet tighter than the Compass Trailhawk’s (34.8 feet vs. 35.3 feet). The Outlander Sport’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the Compass 4x4 Sport/Latitude/Limited’s (34.8 feet vs. 36.3 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander Sport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Compass (8.5 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Outlander Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 350 pounds less than the Jeep Compass.

The Outlander Sport has .2 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, 2.4 inches more rear hip room and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Compass.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mitsubishi service is better than Jeep. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 38% lower rating, Jeep is ranked 25th.

The Outlander Sport’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Compass’ standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Both the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and Jeep Compass offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The Outlander Sport offers available power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Compass’ foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The Outlander Sport’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Compass Sport doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

The Outlander Sport is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Compass doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Insurance will cost less for the Outlander Sport owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Outlander Sport with a number “1” insurance rate while the Compass is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Outlander Sport is less expensive to operate than the Compass because typical repairs cost less on the Outlander Sport than the Compass, including $7 less for a muffler, $7 less for front brake pads and $83 less for front struts.
