For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the GMC Canyon are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Canyon are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Canyon offers an optional Surround Vision to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Grenadier Quartermaster only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Canyon’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Canyon’s standard Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Rear Cross Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

Both the Canyon and the Grenadier Quartermaster have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.

Warranty

There are almost 84 times as many GMC dealers as there are INEOS dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Canyon’s warranty.

Engine

The Canyon’s 2.7 turbo 4-cylinder produces 28 more horsepower (310 vs. 282) and 98 lbs.-ft. more torque (430 vs. 332) than the Grenadier Quartermaster’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Canyon gets better mileage than the Grenadier Quartermaster:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Canyon’s fuel efficiency. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the GMC Canyon uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Grenadier Quartermaster requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Canyon has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system or a tether to prevent losing the cap.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Canyon’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Grenadier Quartermaster:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Canyon has larger standard tires than the Grenadier Quartermaster (265/65R18 vs. 255/70R18). The Canyon AT4X’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Grenadier Quartermaster (315/70R17 vs. 35 x 11.5R17).

The Canyon Denali’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grenadier Quartermaster’s 70 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Canyon Denali offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Grenadier Quartermaster’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Canyon has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The GMC Canyon’s independent front suspension is much lighter than the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster’s solid front axle, which allows the Canyon’s wheels to react more quickly and accurately to the road’s surface, improving both ride and handling.

For much better steering response and tighter handling the Canyon has rack and pinion steering, like Formula racecars, instead of the recirculating-ball type steering of the Grenadier Quartermaster.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Canyon’s wheelbase is 4.4 inches longer than on the Grenadier Quartermaster (131.4 inches vs. 127 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Canyon is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.3 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Grenadier Quartermaster.

For greater off-road capability the Canyon AT4X AEV has a 1.8 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Grenadier Quartermaster (12.2 vs. 10.4 inches), allowing the Canyon to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The GMC Canyon may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 1400 pounds less than the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Canyon has standard flush composite headlights. The Grenadier Quartermaster has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The front grille of the Canyon uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Canyon has .9 inches more front headroom, 5.9 inches more front legroom and 4.3 inches more rear legroom than the Grenadier Quartermaster.

Cargo Capacity

The Canyon’s cargo box is larger than the Grenadier Quartermaster’s in almost every dimension:

The GMC Canyon offers an optional EZ-Lift and Lower, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a tailgate assist.

The GMC Canyon has a standard CornerStep, which allows for much easier access to the cargo area. The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a rear cargo step.

The Canyon has bed indentations that accommodate 2x4’s for two-tiered loading to help accommodate diverse loads; the Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer two-tiered loading. The Canyon also has indentations to separate the cargo box into three different sections length-wise.

The Canyon has stake post holes, to allow the containment of tall, light loads. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer stake post holes.

Servicing Ease

An Oil Life Monitor is standard on the Canyon to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes, air filter replacement, and brake pad replacement, based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. INEOS doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Grenadier Quartermaster.

Ergonomics

The Canyon offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When two different drivers share the Canyon (except Elevation), the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Canyon (except Elevation)’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Canyon’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Grenadier Quartermaster does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Canyon (except Elevation) offers an available heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Canyon’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Grenadier Quartermaster has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

The Canyon’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. INEOS does not offer a locking feature on the Grenadier Quartermaster’s standard power windows.

The Canyon’s driver’s power window opens or closes with one touch of the window control, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths. The Grenadier Quartermaster’s power windows’ switch has to be held the entire time to close it fully.

Keyless Access standard on the Canyon allows you to unlock the doors from the driver’s outside door handle and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. The INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer an advanced key system.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Canyon detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Canyon offers optional extendable sun visors. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Canyon’s optional rear view mirror has an automatic dimming feature. This mirror can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on it, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer the luxury of an automatic dimming rear view mirror.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Canyon (except Elevation) keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Canyon’s optional (except Elevation) heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Canyon offers an optional center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The Canyon’s optional dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Canyon offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the GMC Canyon (except Elevation) offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

Model Availability

The Canyon is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Grenadier Quartermaster doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
