In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Canyon are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Canyon’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The Canyon offers an optional Surround Vision to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Gladiator only offers a rear monitor and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the front or sides.

The Canyon has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the Gladiator’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Canyon has standard Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Braking automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Jeep charges extra for Rear Cross Path Detection on the Gladiator and the Gladiator’s Rear Cross Path Detection does not include automatic braking.

Both the Canyon and the Gladiator have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the GMC Canyon is safer than the Jeep Gladiator:

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Canyon has a 220-amp alternator. The Gladiator’s standard 180-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Canyon has a standard 800-amp battery. The Gladiator’s 700-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 2 places higher in reliability than Jeep.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Canyon’s fuel efficiency. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The Canyon has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

The Canyon AT4X’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Gladiator doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the Canyon has larger standard tires than the Gladiator (265/65R18 vs. 245/75R17). The Canyon AT4X’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Gladiator (315/70R17 vs. 285/70R17).

The Canyon AT4X’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 70 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Gladiator Sport’s standard 75 series tires. The Canyon Denali’s optional tires have a lower 50 series profile than the Gladiator Nighthawk’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Canyon Denali offers optional 22-inch wheels. The Gladiator’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The GMC Canyon’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Jeep Gladiator only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

The GMC Canyon’s independent front suspension is much lighter than the Jeep Gladiator’s solid front axle, which allows the Canyon’s wheels to react more quickly and accurately to the road’s surface, improving both ride and handling.

For much better steering response and tighter handling the Canyon has rack and pinion steering, like Formula racecars, instead of the recirculating-ball type steering of the Gladiator.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Canyon is 2 inches wider in the front and 2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Gladiator.

The Canyon Denali 4x4 handles at .76 G’s, while the Gladiator Mojave pulls only .70 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Canyon Denali 4x4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the Gladiator Rubicon (28 seconds @ .59 average G’s vs. 29.4 seconds @ .56 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Canyon AT4X AEV has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Gladiator Mojave (12.2 vs. 11.6 inches), allowing the Canyon to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The GMC Canyon may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 250 pounds less than the Jeep Gladiator.

The Canyon is 4.8 inches shorter than the Gladiator, making the Canyon easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Canyon has standard flush composite headlights. The Gladiator has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.

The Canyon’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Gladiator’s (7700 vs. 4500 pounds).

When two different drivers share the Canyon (except Elevation), the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Canyon (except Elevation)’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Gladiator doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Canyon (except Elevation) offers an available heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Gladiator doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Canyon’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Gladiator has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

The Canyon’s front and rear power windows all open fully with one touch of the switches and its driver’s window also automatically closes, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Gladiator’s power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully. Only its front windows open automatically.

The Canyon’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The Gladiator’s available power window controls are down in the center of the dashboard, away from the windows and mixed with controls for unrelated features.

On a hot day the Canyon’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Gladiator can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Canyon’s standard Keyless Access allow you to unlock the doors from the driver’s outside door handle and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Push Button Start standard on the Gladiator only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the truck.

The Canyon’s LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than the Gladiator’s standard halogen headlights. LED lights also light instantly and last over twenty times longer than halogen.

The Canyon has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. When the ignition turns off, the headlights turn off after a delay timed to allow you to securely get to your front door. The Gladiator only offers an automatic headlight on/off feature as an extra cost option.

The Canyon has standard power remote mirrors. The Gladiator only comes with remote mirrors at extra cost. Without them the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.

The Canyon’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Jeep charges extra for heated mirrors on the Gladiator.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Canyon (except Elevation) keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Gladiator doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Canyon offers an optional center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children. The Gladiator Sport/Willys/Freedom doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the GMC Canyon (except Elevation) offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The Gladiator doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
