In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the G-Class are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Bentayga doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Mercedes G-Class has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Bentayga doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The G-Class has a standard Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Bentayga doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The G-Class has a standard Maneuvering Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Bentayga doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The G-Class’ standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the Bentayga.

The G-Class’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Bentayga doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the G-Class and the Bentayga have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The G-Class comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Bentayga’s 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.

The G-Class’ corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Bentayga’s (5 vs. 3 years).

There are almost 8 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Bentley dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the G-Class’ warranty.

The G-Class has more powerful engines than the Bentayga:

On the EPA test cycle the G 580 running on electricity gets better mileage than the Bentayga Hybrid running on electricity (68 city/53 hwy vs. 44 city/51 hwy MPGe).

On the EPA test cycle the G 550 running its gasoline engine gets better fuel mileage than the Bentayga V8 running its gasoline engine (17 city/19 hwy vs. 14 city/21 hwy).

The G 580 can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 239 miles. The Bentayga Hybrid has to start its internal combustion engine after only 18 miles.

Regardless of its engine, regenerative brakes improve the G-Class’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. Bentley only offers a regenerative brake system on the Bentayga Hybrid.

The G-Class has 6.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Bentayga Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (26.4 vs. 19.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The G-Class has 3.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Bentayga’s standard fuel tank (26.4 vs. 22.5 gallons).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the Mercedes G-Class at emission levels ranging from “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV) to “Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (SULEV). The Bentley Bentayga is only certified to “Low Emissions Vehicle” (LEV) standards.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes G-Class, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Bentayga.

The G-Class AMG 63’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Bentayga doesn’t offer launch control.

The G-Class stops much shorter than the Bentayga:

For better traction, the G-Class’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Bentayga (295/40R22 vs. 285/45R21).

The G-Class has a standard full size spare (not available on 580) so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Bentayga; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The G-Class’ front to rear weight distribution is more even (53% to 47%) than the Bentayga’s (56% to 44%). This gives the G-Class more stable handling and braking.

The G 580 handles at .80 G’s, while the Bentayga pulls only .78 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the G 580 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Bentayga (9.8 vs. 9.7 inches), allowing the G-Class to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The G 550 is 1 foot, 7.8 inches shorter than the Bentayga, making the G-Class easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Bentayga with its rear seat up (34.8 vs. 17.1 cubic feet). The G-Class has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Bentayga with its rear seat folded (68.6 vs. 62.6 cubic feet).

The G-Class’ standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Bentayga w/Four Seat Comfort Specification doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

The G-Class 580 can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the G-Class can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Bentayga can’t be towed flat on the ground.

Trailer Stability Assist is standard on all models of the G-Class, using the Electronic Stability Program sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Bentayga Hybrid doesn’t offer a trailer sway program.

The G-Class has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Bentayga (1576 vs. 1510 lbs.).

If the windows are left open on the G-Class the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Bentayga can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The G-Class’ power window, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Bentayga’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Mercedes G-Class has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Bentley charges extra for Homelink® on the Bentayga.

The G-Class’ Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Bentayga’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The Mercedes G-Class outsold the Bentley Bentayga by over five to one during 2023.
