Compare the2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEVVS 2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale

For enhanced safety, the front and second-row seat shoulder belts of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Alfa Romeo Tonale doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Outlander PHEV are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Tonale doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Outlander PHEV has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Tonale doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Both the Outlander PHEV and the Tonale have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV weighs 474 to 518 pounds more than the Alfa Romeo Tonale. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Outlander PHEV comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Tonale’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 10,000 miles sooner.

Mitsubishi’s powertrain warranty covers the Outlander PHEV 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Alfa Romeo covers the Tonale. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Tonale ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Outlander PHEV’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the Tonale’s (7 vs. 5 years).

Mitsubishi pays for scheduled maintenance on the Outlander PHEV for 2 years and 30,000 miles. Mitsubishi will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance (up to 3 visits). Alfa Romeo doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Tonale.

There are almost 3 times as many Mitsubishi dealers as there are Alfa Romeo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Outlander PHEV’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mitsubishi vehicles are better in initial quality than Alfa Romeo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi above average in initial quality. With 35 more problems per 100 vehicles, Alfa Romeo is rated below average.

The Outlander PHEV can travel with zero emissions on electricity, only, on a full charge for 38 miles. The Tonale has to start its internal combustion engine after only 33 miles.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Tonale requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

The Outlander PHEV has 3.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Tonale (14.8 vs. 11.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Outlander PHEV has a standard locking fuel door and a locking charge port with a power remote release convenient to the driver and which locks and unlocks with the power locks, respectively. The Tonale doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

For better stopping power the Outlander PHEV’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Tonale:

The Outlander PHEV’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Tonale are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Outlander PHEV has larger standard tires than the Tonale (235/60R18 vs. 225/55R18). The Outlander PHEV SE/SEL’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Tonale (255/45R20 vs. 235/45R19).

The Outlander PHEV has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tonale doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Outlander PHEV’s wheelbase is 2.7 inches longer than on the Tonale (106.5 inches vs. 103.8 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Outlander PHEV’s turning circle is 1.8 feet tighter than the Tonale’s (36.1 feet vs. 37.9 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Outlander PHEV ES has a 2.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Tonale (7.8 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Outlander PHEV to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Outlander PHEV SE/SEL’s minimum ground clearance is 2.3 inches higher than on the Tonale (7.9 vs. 5.6 inches).

The front grille of the Outlander PHEV uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Tonale doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Outlander PHEV has standard seating for 7 passengers; the Tonale can only carry 5.

The Outlander PHEV has 1.8 inches more front headroom, 2.2 inches more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, .1 inches more rear legroom and 1.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Tonale.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Outlander PHEV’s middle and third row seats recline. The Tonale’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Outlander PHEV’s cargo area provides more volume than the Tonale.

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the Outlander PHEV’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Tonale doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Outlander PHEV uses the Active Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Tonale doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mitsubishi service is better than Alfa Romeo. J.D. Power ranks Mitsubishi 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With an 8% lower rating, Alfa Romeo is ranked 11th.

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional at extra cost in the Tonale, the Outlander PHEV SEL has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Outlander PHEV offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Tonale doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Outlander PHEV has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Tonale only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Outlander PHEV to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Tonale doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

When the Outlander PHEV SEL is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Tonale’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Outlander PHEV and the Tonale have standard heated front seats. The Outlander PHEV SEL also has standard heated second row seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The Outlander PHEV SEL offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Tonale.

The Outlander PHEV SEL has a 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Tonale doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Mitsubishi Outlander outsold the Alfa Romeo Tonale by over 23 to one during 2023.
