The Range Rover Sport can travel with zero emissions for 53 miles. The SQ8 can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.
The Range Rover Sport’s standard fuel tank has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the SQ8 (23.8 vs. 22.5 gallons).
Transmission
The Range Rover Sport’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The SQ8 doesn’t offer launch control.
Brakes and Stopping
For better stopping power the Range Rover Sport SV’s brake rotors are larger than those on the SQ8:
|
Range Rover Sport SV |
SQ8 |
Front Rotors |
17.3 inches |
15.8 inches |
Rear Rotors |
15.3 inches |
13.8 inches |
The Range Rover Sport SV offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The SQ8 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.
Tires and Wheels
The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the SQ8; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.
Suspension and Handling
For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 7.7 feet tighter than the SQ8’s (35.9 feet vs. 43.6 feet). The Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is 2.5 feet tighter than the SQ8’s (41.1 feet vs. 43.6 feet).
Chassis
The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the SQ8 (.37) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Sport get better fuel mileage.
The Range Rover Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The SQ8 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.
Passenger Space
The Range Rover Sport has 2.2 inches more front headroom and .6 inches more rear headroom than the SQ8.
Cargo Capacity
The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume than the SQ8 with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 30.5 cubic feet).
The Range Rover Sport’s cargo area is larger than the SQ8’s in almost every dimension:
|
Range Rover Sport |
SQ8 |
Length to seat (2nd/1st) |
38.2”/71.9” |
41.1”/75.4” |
Max Width |

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The SQ8 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.
Towing
Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Sport uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The SQ8 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.
Ergonomics
To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the SQ8 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
The SQ8’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Range Rover Sport’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The SQ8 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.
The Range Rover Sport has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The SQ8 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.
The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The SQ8 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
