Tires and Wheels
The Range Rover Sport SV’s 305/35R23 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Q8’s optional 40 series tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Sport offers optional 23-inch wheels. The Q8’s largest wheels are only 22-inches.
The Range Rover Sport offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Q8; it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.
Suspension and Handling
The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Q8 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.
The front and rear suspension of the Range Rover Sport uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Q8, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.
The Range Rover Sport Autobiography/First Edition offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Audi doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Q8.
For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport w/Rear Wheel Steering’s turning circle is 7.7 feet tighter than the Q8’s (35.9 feet vs. 43.6 feet). The Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is 2.5 feet tighter than the Q8’s (41.1 feet vs. 43.6 feet).

The Range Rover Sport’s minimum ground clearance is 5.2 inches higher than on the Q8 (11 vs. 5.8 inches).
Chassis
The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the Q8 (.39) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Sport get better fuel mileage.
The Range Rover Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Q8 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.
Passenger Space
The Range Rover Sport has 2.2 inches more front headroom and .6 inches more rear headroom than the Q8.
Cargo Capacity
The Range Rover Sport has a much larger cargo volume than the Q8 with its rear seat up (31.9 vs. 30.5 cubic feet).
The Range Rover Sport’s cargo area is larger than the Q8’s in almost every dimension:
|
Range Rover Sport |
Q8 |
Length to seat (2nd/1st) |
38.2”/71.9” |
41.1”/75.4” |
Max Width |

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Range Rover Sport’s rear seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The Q8 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.
Towing
Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the Range Rover Sport uses the Dynamic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Q8 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.
Ergonomics
To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Q8 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
The Q8’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Range Rover Sport’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.
To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The Q8 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.
The Range Rover Sport has standard front air conditioned seats and offers them optionally in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Q8 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.
The Range Rover Sport has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Q8.
To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Q8.
The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Q8 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.
Economic Advantages
The Range Rover Sport will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Range Rover Sport will retain 51.86% to 52.18% of its original price after five years, while the Q8 only retains 51.58% to 51.73%.
Recommendations
J.D. Power and Associates rated the Range Rover Sport second among large premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Q8 isn’t in the top three in its category.
