The GLE Coupe’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The QX55 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The GLE Coupe offers optional Post-Collision Brake, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The QX55 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the GLE Coupe’s standard Downhill Speed Regulation allows you to creep down safely. The QX55 doesn’t offer Downhill Speed Regulation.

Earlier warning of stopped traffic, traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, weather, or accidents, can keep driver's safer and prevent crashes. The GLE Coupe has Car-to-X Communication, a system that seamlessly communicates important warnings to the driver about impending danger, if they're available. The QX55 doesn’t offer a system that can receive automated systems from other vehicles.

Both the GLE Coupe and QX55 have rear cross-traffic warning, but the GLE Coupe has Active Brake Assist (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The QX55’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert doesn’t automatically brake.

The GLE Coupe’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The QX55 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the GLE Coupe and the QX55 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available lane departure warning systems.

The Mercedes GLE Coupe weighs 992 to 1045 pounds more than the Infiniti QX55. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

There are almost 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Infiniti dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GLE Coupe’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Infiniti With 1 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Mercedes higher than Infiniti.

Engine

The GLE Coupe’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder hybrid produces 107 more horsepower (375 vs. 268) and 89 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 280) than the QX55’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the GLE Coupe’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The QX55 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the GLE Coupe’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The QX55 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The GLE Coupe has 6.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the QX55 (22.5 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes GLE Coupe higher (6 out of 10) than the Infiniti QX55 (5). This means the GLE Coupe produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the QX55 every 15,000 miles.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the GLE Coupe’s brake rotors are larger than those on the QX55:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the GLE Coupe has larger standard tires than the QX55 (275/50R20 vs. 255/45R20). The GLE Coupe’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the QX55 (F:285/40R22 & R:325/35R22 vs. 255/45R20).

The GLE Coupe’s optional 285/40R22 front and 325/35R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the QX55’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the GLE Coupe offers optional 22-inch wheels. The QX55’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The GLE Coupe has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the QX55; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The GLE Coupe has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The QX55’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The GLE Coupe offers an available or off-road. The QX55’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The GLE Coupe has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The GLE Coupe’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The QX55 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The GLE Coupe’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The QX55 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the GLE Coupe’s wheelbase is 5.4 inches longer than on the QX55 (115.6 inches vs. 110.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the GLE Coupe is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 4.2 inches wider in the rear than on the QX55.

Passenger Space

The GLE Coupe has 3.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the QX55 (104 vs. 100.2).

The GLE Coupe has .6 inches more front headroom, 5.2 inches more front hip room, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, 6.2 inches more rear hip room and 1.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the QX55.

Cargo Capacity

The GLE Coupe has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the QX55 with its rear seat up (31.6 vs. 26.9 cubic feet). The GLE Coupe has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the QX55 with its rear seat folded (64.1 vs. 54.1 cubic feet).

Towing

The GLE Coupe has a 7700 lbs. towing capacity. The QX55 has no towing capacity.

Optional Trailer Stability Assist on the GLE Coupe uses the Electronic Stability Program sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The QX55 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the GLE Coupe is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the QX55. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the QX55, the GLE Coupe has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GLE Coupe’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The QX55 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The power windows standard on both the GLE Coupe and the QX55 have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the GLE Coupe is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The QX55 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The GLE Coupe’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The QX55’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer fluid is optional on the GLE Coupe to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The QX55 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the GLE Coupe has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The QX55 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the GLE Coupe to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The QX55 doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The GLE Coupe’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The QX55 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Mercedes GLE Coupe and Infiniti QX55 offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The GLE Coupe features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the QX55’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The GLE Coupe offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the QX55.

The GLE Coupe offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The QX55 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The GLE Coupe’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The QX55 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Recommendations

The Mercedes GLE Coupe outsold the Infiniti QX55 by almost 11 to one during 2023.
