The iX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Lyriq doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The iX has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the iX. But it costs extra on the Lyriq.

Both the iX and the Lyriq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The iX’s corrosion warranty is 6 years and unlimited miles longer than the Lyriq’s (12/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the iX for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Cadillac only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Lyriq.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. With 8 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks BMW higher than Cadillac.

Power ranks BMW higher than Cadillac.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 7 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

The iX xDrive50’s standard electric motors produces 151 more horsepower (516 vs. 365) and 239 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 325) than the Lyriq’s standard electric motor. The iX xDrive50’s electric motors produces 1 more horsepower (516 vs. 515) and 114 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors. The iX M60’s standard electric motors produces 95 more horsepower (610 vs. 515) and 361 lbs.-ft. more torque (811 vs. 450) than the Lyriq’s optional electric motors.

As tested in Car and Driver the BMW iX is faster than the Cadillac Lyriq:

The iX xDrive50 20" Wheels can travel longer on a full charge than the Lyriq w/19.2 kW charging (309 miles vs. 303 miles).

The iX has a standard locking charge port which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The Lyriq doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

The iX’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s at 60 in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Lyriq doesn’t offer launch control.

For better stopping power the iX’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Lyriq:

The iX offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Lyriq’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The iX has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The iX’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

The iX xDrive50 handles at .88 G’s, while the Lyriq pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The iX M60 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Lyriq Luxury AWD (25.5 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 26.4 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the iX has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Lyriq (8.7 vs. 7 inches), allowing the iX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The iX has 2.9 inches more front headroom, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room and 1.8 inches more rear headroom than the Lyriq.

The front step up height for the iX is 1.8 inches lower than the Lyriq (17.4” vs. 19.2”). The iX’s rear step up height is 1.9 inches lower than the Lyriq’s (17.3” vs. 19.2”).

The iX has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Lyriq with its rear seat up (35.5 vs. 28 cubic feet). The iX has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Lyriq with its rear seat folded (77.9 vs. 60.8 cubic feet).

The iX’s cargo area is larger than the Lyriq’s in almost every dimension:

A Condition-Based Service Display is standard on the iX to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for vehicle inspections, vehicle inspection based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Cadillac doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Lyriq.

The iX offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the iX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Lyriq can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the iX has a standard rear wiper. The Lyriq doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Laser headlights, optional on the iX, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the Lyriq’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

The Lyriq’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The iX’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Consumer Reports® recommends the BMW iX, based on reliability, safety and performance.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the iX first among upper midsize premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Lyriq isn’t in the top three.

The BMW iX outsold the Cadillac Lyriq by 89% during 2023.
