To allow off-road and deep snow capability, Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Wagoneer S. But it costs extra on the EX40.

Both the Wagoneer S and the EX40 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The Jeep Wagoneer S weighs 1046 to 1272 pounds more than the Volvo EX40. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

Jeep’s powertrain warranty covers the Wagoneer S 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the EX40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the EX40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 9 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Wagoneer S’ warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 42 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks Jeep higher than Volvo.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Volvo With 55 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Jeep higher than Volvo.

Engine

The Wagoneer S’ electric motors produces 352 more horsepower (600 vs. 248) and 307 lbs.-ft. more torque (617 vs. 310) than the EX40 Single Motor’s standard electric motor. The Wagoneer S’ electric motors produces 198 more horsepower (600 vs. 402) and 123 lbs.-ft. more torque (617 vs. 494) than the EX40 Twin Motor’s optional electric motors. The Wagoneer S’ electric motors produces 164 more horsepower (600 vs. 436) and 123 lbs.-ft. more torque (617 vs. 494) than the EX40 Twin Motor Performance’s standard electric motors.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Wagoneer S’ brake rotors are larger than those on the EX40:

The Wagoneer S’ standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the EX40 are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Wagoneer S has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the EX40.

The Wagoneer S has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The EX40 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Wagoneer S’ wheelbase is 6.6 inches longer than on the EX40 (113 inches vs. 106.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Wagoneer S is 1.4 inches wider in the front and .9 inches wider in the rear than on the EX40.

Chassis

The design of the Jeep Wagoneer S amounts to more than styling. The Wagoneer S has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is significantly lower than the EX40 (.329) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Wagoneer S get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Wagoneer S uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The EX40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Wagoneer S has .4 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more front hip room, .7 inches more front shoulder room, 1.9 inches more rear legroom and 1.3 inches more rear shoulder room than the EX40.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Wagoneer S’ rear seats recline. The EX40’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Wagoneer S 4dr Sport Utility has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the EX40 with its rear seat up (30.6 vs. 16 cubic feet). The Wagoneer S 4dr Sport Utility has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the EX40 with its rear seat folded (61 vs. 57.5 cubic feet).

Towing

The Wagoneer S’ standard towing capacity is much higher than the EX40’s (3400 vs. 2000 pounds).

Trailer Sway Control is standard on the Wagoneer S, using the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. A trailer sway program costs extra on the EX40.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the EX40, the Wagoneer S has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Wagoneer S’ standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The EX40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Wagoneer S has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The EX40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Wagoneer S to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. Heated windshield washer nozzles cost extra on the EX40.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Wagoneer S has standard extendable sun visors. The EX40 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Jeep Wagoneer S has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the EX40 Plus/Ultra.

Standard air conditioned seats in the front and rear seats keep the Wagoneer S’ passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The EX40 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The Wagoneer S has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the EX40.

The Wagoneer S has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the EX40.

The Jeep Wagoneer S has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the driver’s visor. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Volvo charges extra for Homelink® on the EX40.

The Wagoneer S has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The EX40 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Wagoneer S’ Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The EX40 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
