For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Volvo XC90 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Mercedes GLB doesn’t offer height-adjustable middle seat belts.

Both the XC90 and GLB have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The XC90 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GLB’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XC90 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The GLB doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Volvo XC90 offers an optional built in child booster seat. It’s more crash worthy than an added child seat because of its direct attachment to the seat. Mercedes doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the GLB. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; XC90 owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the XC90 deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The XC90’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The GLB’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

The XC90 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The GLB doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The XC90 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GLB doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XC90 has standard CTA Auto Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The GLB doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the XC90. But it costs extra on the GLB.

The XC90’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GLB.

Both the XC90 and the GLB have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Volvo XC90 weighs 698 to 1652 pounds more than the Mercedes GLB. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Volvo XC90 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The GLB has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

The XC90’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the GLB’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the XC90 for 3 years and 30,000 miles. Volvo will pay for oil changes, tire rotations, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GLB.

The battery on the XC90 is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the XC90’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The GLB’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the XC90’s reliability 16 points higher than the GLB.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Mercedes vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 4 places higher in reliability than Mercedes.

The XC90 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 26 more horsepower (247 vs. 221) and 8 lbs.-ft. more torque (266 vs. 258) than the GLB’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The XC90 B6’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 74 more horsepower (295 vs. 221) and 52 lbs.-ft. more torque (310 vs. 258) than the GLB’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The XC90 T8’s standard 2.0 turbo/supercharged 4-cylinder hybrid produces 234 more horsepower (455 vs. 221) and 265 lbs.-ft. more torque (523 vs. 258) than the GLB’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The XC90 T8 Extended Range can travel with zero emissions for 32 miles. The GLB can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

The XC90 has 5.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the GLB (18.8 vs. 13.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The XC90 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The GLB doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the XC90 has larger tires than the GLB (275/45R20 vs. 235/55R18).

The XC90’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GLB’s standard 55 series tires. The XC90’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile than the GLB’s optional 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XC90 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the GLB. The XC90’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the GLB.

The XC90 has a standard space-saver spare (not available on T8) so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the GLB; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some tire options on the GLB don’t have a run-flat feature, either.

The XC90 Ultimate has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The XC90’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The GLB doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XC90’s wheelbase is 6.1 inches longer than on the GLB (117.5 inches vs. 111.4 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the XC90 is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than on the GLB.

The XC90’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51.7% to 48.3%) than the GLB’s (57% to 43%). This gives the XC90 more stable handling and braking.

The XC90 B6 Core handles at .85 G’s, while the GLB 250 4MATIC pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The XC90 B6 Core executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GLB 250 4MATIC (26.8 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 27.4 seconds @ .62 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the XC90 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GLB (8.8 vs. 7.9 inches), allowing the XC90 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The XC90 w/Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 2 inches higher than on the GLB (9.9 vs. 7.9 inches).

The XC90 has 1.8 inches more front shoulder room, 1.6 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.5 inches more third row headroom, 2.8 inches more third row legroom and 3.1 inches more third row shoulder room than the GLB.

The front step up height for the XC90 is 1.2 inches lower than the GLB (15.8” vs. 17”). The XC90’s rear step up height is 1.5 inches lower than the GLB’s (16” vs. 17.5”).

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XC90 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GLB only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The XC90 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The GLB doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the XC90 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The GLB doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.
