To maximize occupant safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the BMW M8 have pretensioners to eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer pretensioners.

The M8’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW M8 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The M8 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The M8’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GranTurismo Folgore.

The M8 offers an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The GranTurismo Folgore only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The M8 has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the GranTurismo Folgore’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the M8 has standard Cross Traffic Warning, helping the driver avoid collisions. Maserati charges extra for Rear Cross Path on the GranTurismo Folgore.

The M8 has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the M8 and the GranTurismo Folgore have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The M8’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the GranTurismo Folgore’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M8 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GranTurismo Folgore.

There are over 3 times as many BMW dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the M8’s warranty.

For better stopping power the M8’s brake rotors are larger than those on the GranTurismo Folgore:

The M8 offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

For better traction, the M8 has larger front tires than the GranTurismo Folgore (275/35R20 vs. 265/30R20).

For better maneuverability, the M8 Competition Coupe’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the GranTurismo Folgore’s (40 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The BMW M8 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 700 pounds less than the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore.

The M8 Coupe/Convertible is 3.4 inches shorter than the GranTurismo Folgore, making the M8 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The M8 Gran Coupe has standard seating for 5 passengers; the GranTurismo Folgore can only carry 4.

The M8 Gran Coupe has 11 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GranTurismo Folgore (100 vs. 89).

The M8 Coupe has a much larger trunk than the GranTurismo Folgore (14.8 vs. 9.5 cubic feet).

The M8’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

With its coupe, convertible or sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release in the glovebox, the M8 offers cargo security. The GranTurismo Folgore’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

The M8 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The M8’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The M8’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Maserati does not offer a locking feature on the GranTurismo Folgore’s standard power windows.

Laser headlights, standard on the M8, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the GranTurismo Folgore’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

A power rear sunshade and manual rear side window sunshades are standard in the M8 Gran Coupe to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer a rear or rear side window sunshades.

Both the M8 and the GranTurismo Folgore have standard heated front seats. The M8 also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the GranTurismo Folgore.

The M8 has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the GranTurismo Folgore.

The M8’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The BMW M8 comes in coupe, convertible and sedan bodystyles; the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore isn’t available as a convertible or sedan.
