The 8 Series’ pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The F-Type doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW 8 Series has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The F-Type doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The 8 Series has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The F-Type doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The 8 Series offers an optional Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The F-Type doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The 8 Series offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The F-Type only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The 8 Series’ corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the F-Type’s (12 vs. 6 years).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 8 Series’ reliability 20 points higher than the F-Type.

The M850i’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (553 vs. 516) than the F-Type R75’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8.

Regenerative brakes improve the 8 Series’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The F-Type doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

For better stopping power the 8 Series’ front brake rotors are larger than those on the F-Type:

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the 8 Series can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The F-Type doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

The 8 Series M850i has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The F-Type doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The M850i offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jaguar doesn’t offer an active suspension on the F-Type.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 8 Series’ wheelbase is 7.9 inches longer than on the F-Type (111.1 inches vs. 103.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the 8 Series is 1.6 inches wider in the front and .5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the F-Type.

The M850i xDrive Coupe handles at .99 G’s, while the F-Type Coupe pulls only .96 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The M850i xDrive Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the F-Type R75 Coupe (24 seconds @ .84 average G’s vs. 24.4 seconds @ .82 average G’s).

The design of the BMW 8 Series amounts to more than styling. The 8 Series offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .31 to .33 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). The 8 Series has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The F-Type doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The F-Type’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The 8 Series’ standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

The 8 Series’ sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The F-Type’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

The 8 Series has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the F-Type.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the 8 Series offers an optional Active Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The F-Type doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

With standard voice command, the 8 Series offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The F-Type doesn’t offer a voice control system.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the BMW 8 Series has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The F-Type doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The 8 Series’ optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The F-Type’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.

The BMW 8 Series comes in coupe, convertible and sedan bodystyles; the Jaguar F-Type isn’t available as a sedan.
