With its standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, the Kia Telluride is better at preventing collisions with pedestrians than the Genesis GV80, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

Compared to metal, the Telluride’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV80 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Telluride and the GV80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Kia Telluride is safer than the Genesis GV80:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Kia Telluride is safer than the Genesis GV80:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Telluride is 1.2% to 1.4% less likely to roll over than the GV80.

Warranty

There are over 3 times as many Kia dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Telluride’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Telluride’s reliability 19 points higher than the GV80.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia fourth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Genesis is ranked 13th.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Kia vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in long-term dependability. With 3 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Genesis is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Kia vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Kia 8 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Telluride gets better mileage than the GV80:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Kia Telluride uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV80 2.5T requires premium, which can cost on average about 84.9 cents more per gallon.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Kia Telluride higher (6 out of 10) than the Genesis GV80 (5). This means the Telluride produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the GV80 every 15,000 miles.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Telluride is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than on the GV80.

The Telluride SX 4x4 handles at .80 G’s, while the GV80 Standard pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

For greater off-road capability the Telluride X-Line has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GV80 (8.4 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Telluride to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Kia Telluride may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 650 pounds less than the Genesis GV80.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the Telluride SX 4x4 is quieter than the GV80 Advanced (63 vs. 66 dB).

Passenger Space

The Telluride has standard seating for 8 passengers; the GV80 can only carry up to 7.

The Telluride has 15 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GV80 (155 vs. 140).

The Telluride has .7 inches more front headroom, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.8 inches more rear headroom, 3.7 inches more rear legroom, 3 inches more rear shoulder room, 3.8 inches more third row headroom, 1.1 inches more third row legroom and 2.1 inches more third row shoulder room than the GV80.

Towing

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Telluride uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV80 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

Consumer Reports rated the Telluride’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the GV80’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Telluride’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the GV80’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

The Telluride EX/SX has standard front air conditioned seats and the Telluride SX Prestige also has them in the second row. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The GV80 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

Model Availability

The Telluride is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The GV80 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the Kia Telluride, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Genesis GV80 isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Telluride second among upper midsize suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The GV80 isn’t in the top three in its category.

The Telluride was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2024 and 4 more times in the last 5 years. The GV80 hasn’t been picked since 2021, and the GV80 has only been chosen once.

Motor Trend selected the Telluride as their 2020 Sport Utility of the Year. The GV80 has never been chosen.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Telluride as the 2020 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year. The GV80 has never been chosen.

The Kia Telluride outsold the Genesis GV80 by almost six to one during 2023.
