2025 Volvo EX40
2024 Porsche Macan Electric

Safety

The EX40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the EX40 and Macan Electric have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The EX40 Ultra has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Macan Electric’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The EX40 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The EX40 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The EX40 has a standard CTA Auto Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The EX40’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the EX40 and the Macan Electric have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Warranty

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX40 for 3 years and 30,000 miles longer than Porsche pays for maintenance for the Macan Electric (4/40,000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 42 percent more Volvo dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the EX40’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

The EX40 can travel with zero emissions for 260 to 296 miles (dependent on model). The Macan Electric can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

Tires and Wheels

The EX40’s standard 235/50R19 front tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Macan Electric’s standard 55 series front tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the EX40’s turning circle is 2.3 feet tighter than the Macan Electric’s (37.4 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

Chassis

The Volvo EX40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 700 to 800 pounds less than the Porsche Macan Electric.

The EX40 is 1 foot, 1.6 inches shorter than the Macan Electric, making the EX40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the EX40’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

The EX40 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The EX40’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Macan Electric’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX40 has a standard rear wiper. A rear wiper costs extra on the Macan Electric.

Model Availability

The EX40 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
