The EX40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The I-Pace doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EX40 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Volvo EX40 has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The EX40 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The I-Pace doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The EX40 has a standard CTA Auto Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The I-Pace doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EX40’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The I-Pace doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

The EX40’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the I-Pace’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are almost 2 times as many Volvo dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the EX40’s warranty.

The EX40 Twin Motor’s optional electric motors produces 8 more horsepower (402 vs. 394) than the I-Pace’s electric motors. The EX40 Twin Motor Performance’s standard electric motors produces 42 more horsepower (436 vs. 394) than the I-Pace’s electric motors.

For better traction and acceleration, the EX40 has larger rear tires than the I-Pace (255/45R19 vs. 245/50R20).

For better maneuverability, the EX40’s turning circle is 3.1 feet tighter than the I-Pace’s (37.4 feet vs. 40.5 feet).

The EX40 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the EX40 will retain 49.64% to 50.07% of its original price after five years, while the I-Pace only retains 47.85%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Volvo EX40 will be $15736 to $20540 less than for the Jaguar I-Pace.

The Volvo XC40 outsold the Jaguar I-Pace by over 55 to one during 2023.
