Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Supra Auto offers optional Emergency Braking that use rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Supra’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Supra’s optional Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Parking Support Brake on the Auto automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The Supra’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Supra and the 718 Cayman have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems and rear parking sensors.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Supra 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Porsche covers the 718 Cayman. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 718 Cayman ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Supra for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Porsche pays for maintenance for the 718 Cayman (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 6 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Supra’s warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Porsche vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota second in reliability, above the industry average. With 28 more problems per 100 vehicles, Porsche is ranked 6th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Porsche vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in overall reliability. Porsche is ranked 8th.

The Supra’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 82 more horsepower (382 vs. 300) and 88 lbs.-ft. more torque (368 vs. 280) than the 718 Cayman’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder. The Supra’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 32 more horsepower (382 vs. 350) and 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (368 vs. 309) than the 718 Cayman S’ standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The Supra’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 59 lbs.-ft. more torque (368 vs. 309) than the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0’s standard 4.0 GT3 6-cylinder. The Supra’s 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (368 vs. 331) than the 718 Cayman GT4 RS’ standard 4.0 DOHC 6-cylinder.

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Toyota Supra higher (4 to 6 out of 10) than the Porsche 718 Cayman (1 to 5). This means the Supra produces up to 45.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the 718 Cayman every 15,000 miles.

The Toyota Supra comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the 718 Cayman.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Toyota Supra, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 718 Cayman.

For better traction, the Supra has larger tires than the 718 Cayman (F:255/35R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. F:235/45R18 & R:265/45R18). The Supra’s front tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 718 Cayman (255/35R19 vs. 245/35R20).

The Supra’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 718 Cayman’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Supra has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the 718 Cayman.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Supra is 2.8 inches wider in the front and 2.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the 718 Cayman.

For better maneuverability, the Supra’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the 718 Cayman’s (34.1 feet vs. 36.1 feet). The Supra’s turning circle is 3.3 feet tighter than the 718 Cayman GT4 RS’ (34.1 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the Supra 3.0 Premium is quieter than the 718 Cayman GT4 RS:

The Supra offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Supra Premium has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and warning readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the Supra the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the 718 Cayman can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Supra has a standard Smart Key System that allows you to unlock the doors from either outside door handle and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Porsche Entry and Drive costs extra on the 718 Cayman.

The Supra’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The 718 Cayman’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Supra’s LED headlights produce a white, bright light using less electricity than the 718 Cayman’s standard xenon high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. HID headlights can be slow to reach full brightness or power cycle, causing issues when flashing them to signal other vehicles; LED headlights light instantly. LED lights also last about three to four times as long.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Toyota Supra Premium/Manual has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The 718 Cayman doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

Insurance will cost less for the Supra owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Supra will cost $720 less than the 718 Cayman over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Toyota Supra will be $17941 to $62139 less than for the Porsche 718 Cayman.
