The iX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the iX and Grand Cherokee have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The iX has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Grand Cherokee’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The iX’s standard pretensioning seatbelts also sense rear collisions and remove slack from the front seatbelts to help protect the occupants from whiplash and other injuries. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The iX has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the iX. But it costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

Both the iX and Grand Cherokee have rear cross-traffic warning, but the iX has Cross Traffic Warning with braking function (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Grand Cherokee’s Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the iX and the Grand Cherokee have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The iX comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Grand Cherokee’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The iX’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Grand Cherokee’s (12 vs. 5 years).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the iX for 1 year longer than Jeep pays for maintenance for the Grand Cherokee (3 years vs. 2 years).

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the iX’s reliability 33 points higher than the Grand Cherokee.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that BMW vehicles are more reliable than Jeep vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks BMW 17 places higher in reliability than Jeep.

Engine

The iX xDrive50’s standard electric motors produces 223 more horsepower (516 vs. 293) and 307 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 257) than the Grand Cherokee’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6. The iX xDrive50’s electric motors produces 141 more horsepower (516 vs. 375) and 94 lbs.-ft. more torque (564 vs. 470) than the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The iX M60’s standard electric motors produces 235 more horsepower (610 vs. 375) and 341 lbs.-ft. more torque (811 vs. 470) than the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

The iX can travel with zero emissions on a full charge for 284 to 309 miles. The Grand Cherokee 4xe has to start its internal combustion engine after only 26 miles.

Regardless of its engine, regenerative brakes improve the iX’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. Jeep only offers a regenerative brake system on the Grand Cherokee 4xe.

The iX has a standard locking charge port which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Grand Cherokee. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage; a locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the BMW iX higher (10 out of 10) than the Jeep Grand Cherokee (7). This means the iX produces up to 11.8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Grand Cherokee every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The iX’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s at 60 in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer launch control.

Tires and Wheels

The iX xDrive50’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Grand Cherokee Laredo’s standard 70 series tires. The iX’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the iX xDrive50 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Grand Cherokee Laredo. The iX’s optional 22-inch wheels are larger than the 21-inch wheels on the Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the iX’s wheelbase is 1.4 inches longer than on the Grand Cherokee (118.1 inches vs. 116.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the iX is .3 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Grand Cherokee.

The iX xDrive50 handles at .88 G’s, while the Grand Cherokee 4x4 pulls only .79 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The iX M60 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.6 seconds quicker than the Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 (25.5 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .58 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the iX has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Grand Cherokee (8.7 vs. 8.4 inches), allowing the iX to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The iX has 1.6 inches more front headroom, 2.3 inches more front shoulder room, .1 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear legroom and .3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Grand Cherokee.

The front step up height for the iX is 2.8 inches lower than the Grand Cherokee (17.4” vs. 20.2”). The iX’s rear step up height is 4.2 inches lower than the Grand Cherokee’s (17.3” vs. 21.5”).

Cargo Capacity

The iX has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Grand Cherokee with its rear seat folded (77.9 vs. 70.8 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the iX easier. The iX’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 30.3 inches, while the Grand Cherokee’s liftover is 33 inches.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the iX’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Ergonomics

The iX’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Grand Cherokee’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open or close them fully.

If the windows are left open on the iX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Grand Cherokee can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The iX’s standard Comfort Access allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Keyless Enter-N-Go standard on the Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer a sensor on the rear doors, so you’ll have to reach a front handle to unlock the rear door.

The iX’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Grand Cherokee’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Laser headlights, optional on the iX, produce their light by firing blue lasers through phosphorus, a process that uses one-half the power of the Grand Cherokee’s LED headlights. Laser headlights can have double the range of LEDs with a much smaller surface area.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the iX has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t offer cornering lights. The iX also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The BMW iX has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the Grand Cherokee Overland/Summit.

The iX has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the Grand Cherokee.

The BMW iX has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Homelink® is only available on the Grand Cherokee Limited/4xe/Overland/Summit.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the BMW iX has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Grand Cherokee and isn’t available on the Grand Cherokee Laredo A.

The iX’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Parking Assistant Professional will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Grand Cherokee Summit’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends the BMW iX, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't recommended.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the iX first among upper midsize premium suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Grand Cherokee isn’t in the top three in its category.
