The Corvette has standard tall side airbags which act as a forgiving barrier between the driver and outboard passenger's upper bodies and the window and pillars. Combined with high-strength steel door beams and lower side airbags this system increases head protection in broadside collisions. The 296 doesn't offer side airbag protection for the head.

The Corvette has standard Automatic Emergency Braking, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The 296 doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The Corvette E-Ray has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The 296 doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Corvette’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The 296 doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Corvette’s optional Rear Cross Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The 296 doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

The Corvette has standard OnStar®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The 296 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Corvette and the 296 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available blind spot warning systems.

Warranty

Chevrolet’s powertrain warranty covers the Corvette 2 years longer than Ferrari covers the 296. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the 296 ends after only 3 years.

The Corvette’s corrosion warranty is 3 years longer than the 296’s (6 vs. 3 years).

There are over 72 times as many Chevrolet dealers as there are Ferrari dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Corvette’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Corvette third among compact premium sporty cars in their 2024 Initial Quality Study. The 296 isn’t in the top three in its category.

Engine

The Corvette ZR1’s standard 5.5 turbo V8 produces 245 more horsepower (1064 vs. 819) and 282 lbs.-ft. more torque (828 vs. 546) than the 296’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Corvette gets better mileage than the 296 running its gasoline engine:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Corvette (except Z06/ZR1)’s fuel efficiency. The 296 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

The Corvette has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the 296 (18.5 vs. 17.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Corvette has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The 296 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Drivetrain

All wheel drive, available in the Corvette, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Ferrari 296 is not available with all wheel drive.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Corvette Z06/E-Ray/ZR1’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the 296 (F:275/30R20 & R:345/25R21 vs. F:245/35R20 & R:305/35R20).

The Corvette’s standard 305/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the 296’s standard 35 series tires. The Corvette Z06/E-Ray/ZR1’s 275/30R20 front and 345/25R21 rear tires have a lower 30 series front and 25 series rear profile than the 296’s 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Corvette Z06/E-Ray/ZR1 has standard 21-inch rear wheels. The 296’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Corvette has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 296 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the Corvette can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The 296 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Corvette’s wheelbase is 4.8 inches longer than on the 296 (107.2 inches vs. 102.4 inches).

The Corvette Z06 Z07 Coupe handles at 1.16 G’s, while the 296 GTB pulls only 1.12 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the Corvette with Magnetic Ride Control’s turning circle is 2.7 feet tighter than the 296’s (36.4 feet vs. 39.1 feet). The Corvette’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the 296’s (38.1 feet vs. 39.1 feet).

Chassis

The Corvette uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The 296 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Cargo Capacity

The Corvette Coupe has a much larger trunk than the 296 GTB (12.6 vs. 5 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Corvette has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The 296 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Corvette’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The 296’s available power window controls are spread out on the center console where they can’t be seen without the driver completely removing his eyes from the road.

On a hot day the Corvette has a standard remote opening feature, to lower the top from outside. The 296 doesn’t offer a remote top, so the driver will have to enter the car, turn the ignition on and lower the top.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Corvette detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The 296 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Corvette has standard extendable sun visors. The 296 doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Corvette’s power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The 296’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

The Corvette offers optional heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren’t available in the 296.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Corvette keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The 296 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Corvette’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The 296 doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Corvette’s standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. The 296 doesn’t offer dual zone air conditioning.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Chevrolet Corvette offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The 296 doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Chevrolet Corvette, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The Corvette was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2024 and 24 more times in the last 40 years. The 296 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
