Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Odyssey deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Odyssey’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Pacifica’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

The Odyssey has a standard Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Odyssey’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Odyssey and the Pacifica have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available rear parking sensors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the Chrysler Pacifica:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the Chrysler Pacifica:

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Honda Odyssey is safer than the Pacifica:

The Honda Odyssey achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2024 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, and pedestrian crash prevention testing. The Pacifica last would have qualified as a “Top Safety Pick” in 2023.

Reliability

The engine in the Odyssey has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the Pacifica have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Chrysler With 104 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Honda higher than Chrysler.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Chrysler vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 25 places higher in reliability than Chrysler.

Engine

The Odyssey’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6 produces 20 more horsepower (280 vs. 260) than the Pacifica Hybrid’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 hybrid.

As tested in Motor Trend the Honda Odyssey is faster than the Chrysler Pacifica:

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Odyssey’s fuel efficiency. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Both the Odyssey and the Pacifica have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All Odysseys have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The Pacifica Hybrid doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

The Odyssey has 3 gallons more fuel capacity than the Pacifica Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (19.5 vs. 16.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Odyssey has a standard locking fuel door which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The fuel filler door is not lockable on the Pacifica. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and a locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

Transmission

A 10-speed automatic is standard on the Honda Odyssey, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a nine-speed automatic is available for the Pacifica.

Brakes and Stopping

The Odyssey stops shorter than the Pacifica:

Tires and Wheels

The Odyssey EX-L’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 60 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Pacifica’s standard 65 series tires.

For better load carrying, ride, handling and brake cooling the Odyssey EX-L has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Pacifica.

The Odyssey has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Pacifica doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The Odyssey has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Odyssey flat and controlled during cornering. The Pacifica 4x2 suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For better maneuverability, the Odyssey’s turning circle is .1 feet tighter than the Pacifica’s (39.6 feet vs. 39.7 feet). The Odyssey’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the Pacifica AWD’s (39.6 feet vs. 40.2 feet).

Passenger Space

The Odyssey has 1.9 inches more rear legroom and 1.6 inches more third row legroom than the Pacifica.

Cargo Capacity

The Odyssey’s cargo area provides more volume than the Pacifica.

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Odyssey easier. The Odyssey’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 22.5 inches, while the Pacifica’s liftover is 24.3 inches.

Towing

While the Pacifica Hybrid is not recommended to tow, any Odyssey can tow a minimum of 3500 pounds.

Ergonomics

The Odyssey’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The Pacifica’s standard rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to open them fully. Only its driver’s window closes automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Odyssey the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Pacifica can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Odyssey Touring/Elite has a standard center folding armrest for the third row rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and can provide a barrier between children. The Pacifica doesn’t offer a third row rear seat center armrest.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Honda Odyssey has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The Pacifica doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Odyssey owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Odyssey will cost $250 less than the Pacifica over a five-year period.

The Odyssey will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Odyssey will retain 54.9% to 58.5% of its original price after five years, while the Pacifica only retains 48.53% to 50.2%.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Odyssey is less expensive to operate than the Pacifica because typical repairs cost much less on the Odyssey than the Pacifica, including $320 less for a muffler, $121 less for front brake pads, $165 less for front struts and $550 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda Odyssey will be $2022 to $12087 less than for the Chrysler Pacifica.
