Warranty
Subaru’s powertrain warranty covers the Forester 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volvo covers the XC40. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the XC40 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.
There are over 2 times as many Subaru dealers as there are Volvo dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Forester’s warranty.
Reliability
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Subaru vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Subaru above average in initial quality. With 59 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volvo is rated below average.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Subaru vehicles are more reliable than Volvo With 47 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Subaru higher than Volvo.

The Forester has 2.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the XC40 (16.6 vs. 14.2 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
Environmental Friendliness
In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Subaru Forester higher (7 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (5). This means the Forester produces up to 8 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.
Transmission
The Forester has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The XC40 doesn’t offer a CVT.
Brakes and Stopping
The Forester’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the XC40 are solid, not vented.
The Forester stops much shorter than the XC40:

For greater off-road capability the Forester has a greater minimum ground clearance than the XC40 (8.7 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Forester to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.
Chassis
The Subaru Forester may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 350 pounds less than the Volvo XC40.
The front grille of the Forester uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The XC40 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Forester has 12.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the XC40 (110.8 vs. 98).
The Forester has 2.2 inches more front headroom, 2.4 inches more front legroom, 1 inch more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, 3.3 inches more rear legroom and .4 inches more rear shoulder room than the XC40.

Servicing Ease
The engine in the Forester is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the XC40. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.
J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Subaru service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks Subaru 7th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 28% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 23rd.
Ergonomics
