Compare the2025 Genesis G70VS 2025 Kia K5

The G70 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The K5 doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The G70 has standard whiplash protection, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the whiplash protection system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The K5 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The G70 has standard Connected Care, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The K5 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the G70 and the K5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The G70’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the K5’s (7/unlimited vs. 5/100,000).

Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G70 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Kia doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the K5.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the G70 has a standard 800-amp battery. The K5’s 760-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the G70 is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the G70’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The K5’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

The G70 2.5T’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 109 more horsepower (300 vs. 191) and 130 lbs.-ft. more torque (311 vs. 181) than the K5’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder. The G70 2.5T’s 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder produces 10 more horsepower (300 vs. 290) than the K5 GT’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The G70 3.3T’s standard 3.3 turbo V6 produces 75 more horsepower (365 vs. 290) and 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (376 vs. 311) than the K5 GT’s standard 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the G70 2.5T 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Kia K5 4 cyl.:

Both the G70 2.5T and the K5 LX have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All G70 2.5Ts have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

For better stopping power the G70’s brake rotors are larger than those on the K5:

The G70’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the K5 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the G70 has larger tires than the K5 (F:225/40R19 & R:255/35R19 vs. 205/65R16).

The G70’s 225/40R19 front and 255/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the K5 LXS’ standard 65 series tires. The G70’s tires are lower profile than the K5 GT’s 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the G70 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the K5 LXS.

The G70 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The K5’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The G70’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (51% to 49%) than the K5’s (59% to 41%). This gives the G70 more stable handling and braking.

The G70 handles at .94 G’s, while the K5 GT-Line AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The G70 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.6 seconds quicker than the K5 GT-Line AWD (24.9 seconds @ .77 average G’s vs. 27.5 seconds @ .61 average G’s).

The G70 is 8.7 inches shorter than the K5, making the G70 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the G70 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The K5 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the G70’s trunk lid uses concealed beam hinges that don’t intrude into the trunk. Its intrusive beam hinge reduces the K5’s useful trunk space.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the G70. The K5 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the G70 3.3T Sport Prestige has a standard power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button or just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The K5 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

The engine in the G70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the K5. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The G70 3.3T Sport Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The K5 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The G70’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The K5’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the G70 the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the K5 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The G70 Advanced/Sport Prestige’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The K5’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the G70 3.3T Elite/Prestige/Sport has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The K5 doesn’t offer cornering lights.

The G70’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The K5 offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The G70 has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats are only available on the K5 GT-Line/EX/GT. The G70 Prestige/Sport also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the K5.

Both the G70 and the K5 offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the G70 has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The K5 doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The Genesis G70 has a standard Homelink wireless remote control system for garage door operation and device management, conveniently located on the rear view mirror. Homelink® eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries. Kia charges extra for Homelink® on the K5.

The G70 was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2019. The K5 has never been chosen by Car and Driver in their “10Best” issue.
