For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the Ram 1500 have an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Sierra 1500.
To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Ram 1500 has a standard 230-amp alternator (240-amp - Ram 1500 optional). The Sierra 1500’s standard 220-amp alternator and largest (V8) 170-amp alternator aren’t as powerful.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Ram vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ram 9 places higher in reliability than GMC.
