The CLE’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the CLE are reminded to check the back seat. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The CLE has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The CLE has standard Maneuvering Assistance that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The CLE offers four-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer four-wheel drive.

Earlier warning of stopped traffic, traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, weather, or accidents, can keep driver's safer and prevent crashes. The CLE has Car-to-X Communication, a system that seamlessly communicates important warnings to the driver about impending danger, if they're available. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a system that can receive automated systems from infrastructure or other vehicles.

The CLE offers an optional Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The CLE’s blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the CLE’s standard Rear Cross-Traffic Alert uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side and Active Brake Assist automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a rear cross-path warning system.

Both the CLE and the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available lane departure warning systems.

The Mercedes CLE weighs 1106 to 1775 pounds more than the MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts. Crosswinds also affect lighter cars more.

Warranty

There are almost 4 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are MINI dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the CLE’s warranty.

Fuel Economy and Range

The CLE has 5.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (17.4 vs. 11.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes CLE higher (7 to 8 out of 10) than the MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (5 to 7). This means the CLE produces up to 13.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The Mercedes CLE comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. Automatic costs extra on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes CLE, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the CLE’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door:

The CLE’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the CLE has larger standard tires than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (245/45R18 vs. 175/65R15). The CLE’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (F:245/40R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. 205/40R18).

The CLE’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s standard 65 series tires. The CLE’s optional 245/35R20 front and 275/30R20 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the CLE has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 15-inch wheels are standard on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. The CLE’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels optional on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

Suspension and Handling

The CLE’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the CLE’s wheelbase is 14.6 inches longer than on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (112.8 inches vs. 98.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the CLE is 4.4 inches wider in the front and 4.8 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

The CLE’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (55% to 45%) than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s (62.3% to 35.1%). This gives the CLE more stable handling and braking.

The CLE 450 Coupe handles at .91 G’s, while the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The CLE 450 Coupe executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (26 seconds @ .69 average G’s vs. 26.9 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

Passenger Space

The CLE has 7.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (88 vs. 80.3).

The CLE Coupe has .7 inches more front legroom, 5.2 inches more front hip room, 5.1 inches more front shoulder room, 3.4 inches more rear legroom, 4.4 inches more rear hip room and 4.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

Cargo Capacity

The CLE Coupe has a much larger trunk than the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door with its rear seat up (11.2 vs. 8.7 cubic feet).

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the CLE. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the CLE’s power trunk can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening liftgate.

Servicing Ease

The engine in the CLE is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

The CLE has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When three different drivers share the CLE, the memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions, steering wheel position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer a memory system.

The CLE’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The CLE’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

The CLE has standard Keyless-Go that allows you to unlock the doors from either outside door handle, open the trunk, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Only the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door Signature/Iconic offers Comfort Access.

The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The CLE’s optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the CLE offers optional extendable sun visors. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the CLE keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The CLE offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door.

The CLE has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door Signature/Iconic.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the CLE has standard rear a/c vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door doesn’t offer rear vents.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes CLE has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Cooper Hardtop 2 Door Iconic offers wireless charging.

The CLE’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Cooper Hardtop 2 Door Iconic’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
