Compare the2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5VS 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV

Both the Ioniq 5 and Equinox EV have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Ioniq 5 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Equinox EV’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the Ioniq 5’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The Equinox EV doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

Both the Ioniq 5 and the Equinox EV have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available around view monitors.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2024 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Equinox EV has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2024.

The Ioniq 5 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Equinox EV’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Hyundai’s powertrain warranty covers the Ioniq 5 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Chevrolet covers the Equinox EV. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Equinox EV ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The Ioniq 5’s corrosion warranty is 1 year and unlimited miles longer than the Equinox EV’s (7/unlimited vs. 6/100,000).

Hyundai pays for scheduled maintenance on the Ioniq 5 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Hyundai will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Chevrolet only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Equinox EV.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Hyundai vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Hyundai 9 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard locking charge port with a power release on its key fob. The Equinox EV doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ioniq 5’s wheelbase is 1.8 inches longer than on the Equinox EV (118.1 inches vs. 116.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Ioniq 5 is .9 inches wider in the front and 1.1 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Equinox EV.

The Ioniq 5 Limited AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the Equinox EV RS pulls only .78 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 900 pounds less than the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

The Ioniq 5 is 8.1 inches shorter than the Equinox EV, making the Ioniq 5 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Ioniq 5 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Equinox EV doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Maximum trailer towing in the Chevrolet Equinox EV is limited to 1500 pounds. The Ioniq 5 offers up to a 2300 lbs. towing capacity.

The Ioniq 5 SEL/Limited’s front power windows both open or close with one touch of the switches. The Equinox EV’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Ioniq 5 to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Equinox EV doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Ioniq 5 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Equinox EV.

The Ioniq 5 Limited’s Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Equinox EV’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.
