Compare the2024 Honda PassportVS 2025 Genesis GV70

Compared to metal, the Passport’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The Genesis GV70 has a metal gas tank.

Both the Passport and the GV70 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

There are over 4 times as many Honda dealers as there are Genesis dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Passport’s warranty.

The engine in the Passport has a single overhead cam for simplicity. The engines in the GV70 have dual overhead cams, which add to the number of moving parts and the complexity of the cylinder heads.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Passport’s reliability 15 points higher than the GV70.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ January 2024 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 13 places higher in reliability than Genesis.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Honda Passport is faster than the Genesis GV70 turbo 4 cyl.:

On the EPA test cycle the Passport gets better fuel mileage than the GV70 3.5 turbo V6 (19 city/24 hwy vs. 18 city/24 hwy).

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Passport’s fuel efficiency. The GV70 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda Passport uses regular unleaded gasoline. The GV70 with the 2.5 turbo 4-cylinder engine requires premium, which can cost on average about 82.8 cents more per gallon.

The Passport has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the GV70 (19.5 vs. 17.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Passport has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The GV70 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Honda Passport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the GV70.

For better traction, the Passport has larger standard tires than the GV70 (245/60R18 vs. 235/55R19). The Passport EX-L/Elite’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GV70 (265/45R20 vs. 255/40R21).

The Passport has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The GV70 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Passport has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The GV70 doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Passport is 2.1 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the GV70.

For greater off-road capability the Passport has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GV70 (8.1 vs. 7.3 inches), allowing the Passport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Passport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The GV70 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Passport Elite is quieter than the GV70 Sport Prestige (76 vs. 77 dB).

The Passport has 11.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GV70 (114.9 vs. 103.6).

The Passport has 2.9 inches more front shoulder room, .9 inches more rear headroom, 2.4 inches more rear legroom and 5 inches more rear shoulder room than the GV70.

The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the GV70 with its rear seat up (41.2 vs. 28.9 cubic feet). The Passport has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the GV70 with its rear seat folded (77.7 vs. 56.9 cubic feet).

The Passport’s cargo area is larger than the GV70’s in almost every dimension:

The Passport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the GV70’s (5000 vs. 3500 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the Passport uses the Vehicle Stability Assist sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The GV70 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Passport has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The GV70 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the Passport the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the GV70 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Consumer Reports rated the Passport’s headlight performance “Very Good,” a higher rating than the GV70’s headlights, which were rated “Good.”

Consumer Reports® recommends the Honda Passport, based on reliability, safety and performance. The Genesis GV70 isn't recommended.
