In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the XM are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The XM has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The XM has a standard Active Park Distance Control that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

The XM’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the XM and the Macan Electric have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The BMW XM weighs 701 to 847 pounds more than the Porsche Macan Electric. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the XM for 2 years and 26000 miles longer than Porsche pays for maintenance for the Macan Electric (3/36,000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are over 76 percent more BMW dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the XM’s warranty.

The XM’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 242 more horsepower (644 vs. 402) and 111 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 479) than the Macan 4 Electric’s standard electric motors. The XM’s 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 14 more horsepower (644 vs. 630) than the Macan Electric Turbo’s standard electric motors. The XM Label Red’s standard 4.4 turbo V8 hybrid produces 108 more horsepower (738 vs. 630) than the Macan Electric Turbo’s standard electric motors.

The XM can travel with zero emissions for 31 miles. The Macan Electric can’t move without running its internal combustion engine.

For better stopping power the XM’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Macan Electric:

The XM’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the Macan Electric are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the XM has larger tires than the Macan Electric (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. F:235/55R20 & R:285/45R20). The XM’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Macan Electric (F:275/35R23 & R:315/30R23 vs. F:255/45R21 & R:295/40R21).

The XM’s standard 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Macan Electric’s standard 55 series front and 45 series rear tires. The XM’s optional 275/35R23 front and 315/30R23 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the Macan Electric’s optional 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XM has standard 22-inch wheels. Smaller 20-inch wheels are standard on the Macan Electric. The XM’s optional 23-inch wheels are larger than the 22-inch wheels optional on the Macan Electric.

The XM has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Macan Electric; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The XM has active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The XM offers an available adjustable active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Porsche doesn’t offer an active suspension on the Macan Electric.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the XM’s wheelbase is 8.3 inches longer than on the Macan Electric (122.2 inches vs. 113.9 inches).

For greater off-road capability the XM has a 1.5 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Macan Electric (8.7 vs. 7.2 inches), allowing the XM to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The XM has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Macan Electric with its rear seat folded (64.3 vs. 59.5 cubic feet).

The XM’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Macan Electric’s (5952 vs. 4409 pounds).

The XM has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The XM’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the Macan Electric.

The XM’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Macan Electric’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XM has a standard rear wiper. A rear wiper costs extra on the Macan Electric.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the XM has standard extendable sun visors. The Macan Electric doesn’t offer extendable visors.
