The M4’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The BMW M4 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The M4 has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

The M4’s standard lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. A lane departure warning system costs extra on the GranTurismo.

The M4 has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the GranTurismo’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the M4 has standard Cross Traffic Warning, helping the driver avoid collisions. Maserati charges extra for Rear Cross Path on the GranTurismo.

Both the M4 and the GranTurismo have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The M4’s corrosion warranty is 8 years and unlimited miles longer than the GranTurismo’s (12/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

BMW pays for scheduled maintenance on the M4 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. BMW will pay for oil changes, air filter replacements, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Maserati doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the GranTurismo.

There are over 3 times as many BMW dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the M4’s warranty.

The M4 Competition’s standard 3.0 turbo 6-cylinder produces 20 more horsepower (503 vs. 483) and 36 lbs.-ft. more torque (479 vs. 443) than the GranTurismo Modena’s standard 3.0 turbo V6.

Regenerative brakes improve the M4’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The M4 offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and sportiness. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

For better stopping power the M4 CCB’s brake rotors are larger than those on the GranTurismo:

The M4 offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The M4 stops shorter than the GranTurismo:

For better traction, the M4 has larger front tires than the GranTurismo (275/40R18 vs. 265/30R20).

The M4 Coupe handles at 1.03 G’s, while the GranTurismo Trofeo pulls only .97 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the M4’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the GranTurismo’s (40 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

The BMW M4 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 250 pounds less than the Maserati GranTurismo.

The M4 is 6.1 inches shorter than the GranTurismo Modena, making the M4 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The M4’s standard power retractable hardtop allows a seamless transition from an open car, to a completely sealed coupe. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a retractable hardtop.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the M4 Coupe a Compact car, while the GranTurismo is rated a Subcompact.

The M4 Coupe has a much larger trunk than the GranTurismo (12 vs. 10.9 cubic feet).

With its coupe body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the M4 offers cargo security. The GranTurismo’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

Both the M4 and the GranTurismo offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the M4 has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The M4’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

The BMW M4 comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Maserati GranTurismo isn’t available as a convertible.

The M4 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The GranTurismo doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
