The Mercedes AMG GT’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The F-Type doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The Mercedes AMG GT has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The F-Type doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Mercedes AMG GT has a standard Post Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The F-Type doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Mercedes AMG GT has standard Close-Range Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The F-Type doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Mercedes AMG GT. But it costs extra on the F-Type.

Earlier warning of stopped traffic, traffic signals, dangerous road conditions, weather, or accidents, can keep driver's safer and prevent crashes. The Mercedes AMG GT has Car-to-X Communication, a system that seemlesly communicates important warnings to the driver about impending danger, if they're available. The F-Type doesn’t offer a system that can receive automated systems from infrastructure or other vehicles.

The Mercedes AMG GT has a standard Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The F-Type only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Mercedes AMG GT and the F-Type have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available lane departure warning systems.

Warranty

There are almost 3 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG GT’s warranty.

Engine

The Mercedes AMG GT 55’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 25 more horsepower (469 vs. 444) and 88 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 428) than the F-Type P450’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8. The Mercedes AMG GT 63’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 2 more horsepower (577 vs. 575) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (590 vs. 516) than the F-Type R75’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8.

As tested in Car and Driver the Mercedes AMG GT 63 is faster than the F-Type R75:

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Mercedes AMG GT’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The F-Type doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG GT higher (5 out of 10) than the Jaguar F-Type (3). This means the Mercedes AMG GT produces up to 16.5 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the F-Type every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic (SMG) is standard on the Mercedes AMG GT, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the F-Type.

The Mercedes AMG GT offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The F-Type doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Mercedes AMG GT’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the F-Type:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Mercedes AMG GT has larger front tires than the F-Type (F:295/30R20 & R:305/30R20 vs. F:265/35R20 & R:305/30R20).

The Mercedes AMG GT’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the F-Type’s standard 35 series front tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Mercedes AMG GT offers optional 21-inch wheels. The F-Type’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The Mercedes AMG GT offers an available active suspension system, which counteracts cornering forces actively, limiting body roll and improving handling and stability. Jaguar doesn’t offer an active suspension on the F-Type.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Mercedes AMG GT’s wheelbase is 3.1 inches longer than on the F-Type (106.3 inches vs. 103.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Mercedes AMG GT is 3.9 inches wider in the front and 2.3 inches wider in the rear than on the F-Type.

The Mercedes AMG GT 63 handles at 1.05 G’s, while the F-Type Coupe pulls only .96 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Mercedes AMG GT 63 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1 seconds quicker than the F-Type R75 Coupe (23.4 seconds @ .89 average G’s vs. 24.4 seconds @ .82 average G’s).

Chassis

The front grille of the Mercedes AMG GT uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The F-Type doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Mercedes AMG GT has standard seating for 4 passengers; the F-Type can only carry 2.

Cargo Capacity

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Mercedes AMG GT’s trunk can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The F-Type doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

The Mercedes AMG GT offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The F-Type doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer fluid is standard on the Mercedes AMG GT to defrost the washer nozzles and quickly clear ice and frost from the windshield without scraping. The F-Type doesn’t offer heated windshield washer fluid.

The F-Type’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Mercedes AMG GT’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

The Mercedes AMG GT’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The F-Type’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

The Mercedes AMG GT has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the car heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the F-Type.

The Mercedes AMG GT offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the F-Type.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Mercedes AMG GT offers an optional Active Distance Assist, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The F-Type doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

With standard Voice Control with Natural Language Understanding, the Mercedes AMG GT offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The F-Type doesn’t offer a voice control system.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Mercedes AMG GT has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the front center console. The F-Type doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.

The Mercedes AMG GT’s Active Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The F-Type’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park.
